BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Alex Bayer is no stranger to the pressures of Pro Day at Bowling Green State University. Just a year ago, the former Falcon was in the same place as 10 of his former teammates were in at Perry Field House earlier this week. Now, a year later, Bayer can look back on the benefits of that day and see how it paid off – after spending his first season in the National Football League as a tight end for the St. Louis Rams.
Â
After a five-year career in the Orange and Brown where he was twice named All-Mid-American Conference, Bayer graduated in December of 2013 from BGSU. From there, he headed off to St. Vincent Sports Performance to train with several other aspiring NFL players at their Indianapolis, Ind. headquarters.
Â
Then, after nearly eight weeks of training in Indianapolis, Bayer returned to Bowling Green for the Falcons Pro Day in front of the NFL scouts. Bayer was just as impressive in his return to Northwest Ohio as he had been during his Falcon career, showcasing his abilities in front of more than 20 NFL teams on March 10, 2014. Bayer put up 20 reps on the bench press to begin the day and then vertical jumped 31.5". Over at Perry Field House, Bayer put up very strong times in the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, and 3-cone drill. On top of all of his impressive intangibles, what impressed scouts more than anything was Bayer's hands during position drills. The tight end showed an impressive skill set, skyrocketing up several teams boards to a potential late-round draft pick. A recap of Bayer's Pro Day by NFL.com's Gil Brandt can be read HERE.
Â
Despite being passed up in the draft, Bayer was a priority free agent on several teams' radars. With more than 10 free agent offers immediately following the draft, Bayer chose to sign a deal with the St. Louis Rams. Read about Bayer's decision and signing HERE.
Â
After signing with the Rams, Bayer reported to St. Louis where he immediately went to work looking to earn a roster spot for the 2014 season under head coach Jeff Fisher. Following OTAs, ESPN.com Rams' blog spotlighted Bayer. That spotlight can be read HERE.
Â
Without a roster spot heading into camp, Bayer continued to work hard looking to impress both the Rams' coaching staff and front office. He did just that, posting a team-high 10 catches during the preseason and earning himself a spot on St. Louis' 53-man roster as a special teams' player and one of the Rams' four tight ends. Among some of his many highlights during the preseason was this 42-yard reception late in the fourth quarter against the New Orleans Saints. That catch can be found HERE.
Â
During his rookie season with the Rams, Bayer played in six games on both offense and special teams. The Pickerington, Ohio native made his regular season debut on Sept. 21 in a game vs. Dallas, where he appeared on special teams. In a week 12 game at San Diego, Bayer made a crucial fumble recovery on special teams when Keenan Allen muffed the punt. Find Bayer's complete bio HERE.
Â
Bayer will look for even bigger things in year two of his NFL career when he reports back to St. Louis in about a month. For now, though, he just wants to be an inspiration to the 10 former Falcons who participated in Pro Day this past week. Bayer was one of six Falcons from the 2013 MAC Championship roster in NFL Rookie Mini Camps last season, and was one of four former Falcons active in the NFL during the 2014 season – joining Super Bowl champion Chris Jones (New England Patriots), Shaun Suisham (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Kory Lichtensteiger (Washington Redskins).
