San Antonio, Texas – Bowling Green State University's Brett Rinker, Jose Narro and Cameron Michalak each posted a sub-par 18-hole round of golf on day one of the 2015 Lone Star Invitational on Monday, Mar. 23, in San Antonio, Texas. The trio led the Falcons to team rounds of 294 and 288 over the first 36 holes of play.
Held at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club, the Falcons' two-round combined team score of 582, +6, placed BGSU in 12th-place overall out of the very tough 15-team field, which includes three top-40 nationally ranked programs.
"We played great. I'm very happy with the way we played today, especially considering we have been outside just once or twice since our last tournament in February. You can see that the conditioning is getting where it needs to be for us to play well when we walked 36 holes in 80 degree weather today. So give credit to our strength and conditioning staff," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "Our top two guys played well, but it was good to see them get some help from the other guys to post solid team scores."
Rinker paced the Falcons with a first round 73, +1, and then a second round 71, -1 under par, to head into the third and final round of play on Tuesday in a tie for 33rd-place overall with a 36-hole score of 144, even par. The sophomore was consistent throughout the day of play, posting three birdies and 11 pars over the first round of play, before carding four more birdies and 11 more pars over the second round of play.
Narro turned in a first round 76, +4, and then dropped seven shots on his second round of play with a score of 69, -3 under par, to end day one in a tie for 37th-place overall with a 36-hole combined score of 145, +1. After two birdies and 10 pars over his first 18 holes of play on Monday morning, the sophomore began to find his confidence in the second round, tallying an eagle on the par 5 fifth hole, two birdies, and 14 pars in the afternoon session.
Michalak had a career-low round of 70, -2 under par, for the frist round, which was a BGSU low round over the first 18 holes of play on Monday morning. The freshman followed up his first round sub-par score with a second round 79, +7, to wrap up day one in a tie for 61st-place overall with a two-round combined score of 149, +5. Michalak tallied five birdies and 23 pars in his first day of play at the Lone Star Invitational on Monday.
Rounding out the lineup for BGSU on day one of the Lone Star Invitational were seniors Ryan Triller and Joe Cooper.
After a first round 78, +6, that saw one birdie and 11 pars, Triller got into a zone over his second round of play, carding six birdies on his way to a 72, even par, to give him a two-round combined score of 150, +6, and place him in a tie for 63rd-place overall.
Cooper was up and down over both rounds of play on Monday, yet finished the day with nine birdies and 13 pars to finish the day in a tie for 73rd-place with rounds of 75, +3, and 76, +4, to give him a 36-hole score of 151, +7.
Texas Tech, the No. 6 nationally ranked men's golf team in NCAA Division I golf, leads the tournament field with a 36-hole combined team score of 549, -27 under par. The Red Raiders are nine strokes ahead of No. 38 Southeastern Louisiana, who is in second-place on the team leaderboard with a two-round team score of 558, -18 under par, while UT-San Antonio, the host institution, sits in third-place with a score of 565, -11 under par.
