Falcons Fly In Scrimmage One Of Spring Practice
March 28, 2015 | Football
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Eight practices in to spring, an untrained eye would think that the Bowling Green State University football team is running at full-speed—like a well-oiled machine. But head coach Dino Babers would disagree, telling the team following Saturday morning's scrimmage that "today will be the slowest we will ever go again."
As the offense enters year two under Babers' system, improvements are noticeable this spring compared to last spring. The Falcons ran 157 snaps in just 95 minutes in the first scrimmage of spring practice.
"This was the third practice in three days, and I thought the guys had very good energy," head coach Dino Babers stated. "The tempo was hot, and we will continue to go even faster. I thought it was a clean scrimmage."
The defense also showed signs of improvement, as the personnel learns defensive coordinator Brian Ward's system during spring practice. The defense did not allow the offense into the end zone on five of the first six possessions during Saturday's action, and forced two turnovers – a fumble at the goal line and an interception by Isaiah Gourdine off an impressive, acrobatic tip by Clint Stephens.
Wide receivers Brandon Ponczak and Trevor Roop each scored multiple touchdowns in the game, while Ryan Burbrink and Ronnie Moore (rush) each had one. Fred Coppet was able to pound one in on the goal line for a touchdown, while tight end Hunter Folkertsma made an impressive one-handed catch in the end zone while taking a big hit from a Falcon defender.
The Falcons will continue spring practices Sunday morning, as they prepare for the spring game on Saturday, April 11. With just five practice sessions left before the live action at Doyt L. Perry Stadium, the Falcons will keep getting faster and better, working towards the season opener on Saturday, Sept. 5 in Nashville, Tenn. against Tennessee.
