But, Eagles down BGSU, 6-1, in Falcons' final match
Sophomore Brittany Plaszewski picked up a singles victory in her final match of the season, but host Eastern Michigan University downed the Bowling Green State University tennis team, 6-1, Sunday afternoon (April 19). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Claudia Wasik Tennis Complex.
The Eagles won the doubles point, with 6-1 victories at both the second and third flights. At the top flight, the BGSU tandem of sophomore Harley Hutchison and freshman Megan Miller burst out to a 4-1 lead against Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova, and the Falcons had a 5-3 lead in that match when it was halted.
The other two doubles matches saw EMU's Ani Gogvadze and Anna Veleva top Plaszewski and freshman Emily Witt at the second flight, while Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna downed sophomore Antonina Farrar and freshman Sydney Seeley.
In singles, the Eagles got wins at the bottom two flights, and Gogvadze got past Hutchison at the second flight to give the hosts four points. Supejova squeaked past Miller in a pair of narrow sets, winning by scores of 7-5 and 6-4, and Martinovska topped Witt in a first-set tiebreaker, then won a close 6-4 second set at flight number three.
At the fourth flight, Plaszewski fell to Friedrichs, 6-2, in the opening set. But, the BG soph rebounded to win the second set in a tiebreaker. Then, with the overall match already decided, the two played a tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, and Plaszewski ran past her EMU opponent by a 10-4 result.
"The girls stayed positive throughout the season and also in today's match so that was good to see," said BGSU coach Olga Elkin. "It was nice finishing out the season getting a win at the four spot. We are already looking forward to getting back into it next year."
The Falcons' singles and doubles lineups on Sunday each featured three sophomores and three freshmen. In fact, the nine-player BGSU roster included no seniors, one junior, four sophs and four frosh. That group included three walk-ons added to the team in January after injuries had reduced the Falcons to three healthy players at the end of the fall semester.
