Pleger Named Capital One Academic All-District
May 22, 2015 | Women's Track and Field
Bowling Green State University hammer thrower Brooke Pleger, who graduated in May with a 3.574 grade point average in nursing, was named Capital One Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Friday.
Â
Pleger, who was named Capital One Third Team Academic All-American a year ago, earned her second career academic all-district honor. She was one of two Mid-American Conference recipients among the 11 who earned all-district honors in District 5, which includes all NCAA Division I schools in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
Â
On the field of competition, Pleger has been unmatched in 2015 and ranks first in the country in the hammer throw. She was named the MAC's Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the conclusion of the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships a week ago after setting a new conference record with a throw of 228-feet-9 to win her third consecutive hammer throw league championship.
Â
Pleger owns the top eight throws in the country this year and enters the NCAA East Region Preliminary meet next week as the top seed. She ranks No. 10 all-time among collegiate hammer throwers. Pleger is a two-time All-American who placed seventh at the NCAA National Championships as a sophomore and third a year ago as a junior. She could become the first female three-time All-American in BGSU history.
Â
On top of those accolades, Pleger earned the department's Falcon Medal of Honor in May, the most prestigious award given to a student-athlete by the department. It is presented to one male and one female each year who most embodies the qualities BGSU Athletics holds important for all student-athletes. She is also back-to-back Female Athlete of the Year at BGSU.
Â
Pleger and three teammates will compete at the NCAA East Region Preliminary meet in Jacksonville, Fla. beginning Thursday. Pleger will compete in the hammer throw Saturday at 1:30 pm.
