Official Mid-American Conference 2015 Women's Golf Academic All-MAC Team Release
Cleveland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team had a league high seven student-athletes named to the 2015 Women's Golf Academic All-MAC Team, the Mid-American Conference announced on Tuesday, June 16. A total of 33 student-athletes were named to the team for the 2014-15 season.
The seven honorees are the most for the Falcons in a single year since BGSU had three student-athletes in Heidi Hansen, Missy Hinds and Shannon Sharp all three named to the Academic All-MAC Team in 1998-99.
Not only did Bowling Green lead this year's team with seven selections, but the Falcons' Fran Rodriguez was one of only three members on the squad with a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average.
Joining Rodriguez on the Academic All-MAC Team from BGSU was Shelby Wilson, Patricia Holt, Mikayla Baer, Lily Bartell, Hannah Lewis and Lauren Diehl.
Rodriguez, who has a 4.00 grade point average while working toward her degree in sport management, posted a third-place finish overall at both the Cardinal Classic and the Jon P. Spiess Memorial event in 2014-15. The sophomore posted a season stroke average of 79.27 over 15 rounds of play on the year and recorded four top-25 place finishes. She also carded a career low round 73 on the year.
Wilson, who graduated with a degree in nursing in May 2015, earned her second Academic All-MAC selection after also earning a spot on the team in 2012-13. A senior co-captain, Wilson led the team with a 77.20 stroke average overall on the season, which ranked 13th overall in the MAC. Tabbed the Co-MVP and the Most Improved Player on the team in 2014-15, the Texas native tallied six top-15 place finishes on the year, including finishing in a tie for 11th-place overall at the 2015 MAC Women's Golf Championships with a score of 235, +19. Wilson, who carded a season low round of 72 on the year, finished in fourth at both the Golden Grizzlies Invitational and the Bearcat Classic. She also finished eighth at the EKU Colonel Classic and the Rocket Classic.
Like Wilson, Holt also graduated in May 2015 with her degree in sport management and earned her second Academic All-MAC honor having been named to the 2013-14 team last year. The 2015 MAC Women's Golf MAC Championships Individual Runner-Up Medalist, Holt made history as her second-place individual finish at the MAC Championships not only earned her a spot on the 2015 MAC Championship All-Tournament Team, but it also was the highest ever finish for a Falcon women's golfer in BGSU's history at the conference championship tournament. The Co-MVP carded a career low season stroke average of 77.60 on the year, which ranked second on the team and 21st overall in the MAC. Tabbed the MAC Women's Golfer of the Week in Feb., the Texas native went a perfect 3-0-0 overall at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge and totaled five top-15 place finishes on the year.
Baer, who is majoring in Biology, turned in five top-20 finishes on the year, which included earning EKU Colonel Classic All-Tournament Team honors with a third-place finish at the rain-shortened event this spring. The sophomore, who carded a BGSU low round 74 at the 2015 MAC Women's Golf Championships in May, posted a stroke average of 79.07 over 15 rounds of play in just her second year as a Falcon. She finished second at the Jon P. Spiess Memorial event, third at the EKU Colonel Classic and fifth at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational.
Bartell earned a spot on the Academic All-MAC Team this year after being named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll last year. Majoring in Journalism with a minor in communications, the junior played in 10 events, including at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge where she went a perfect 3-0-0 overall, and turned in a stroke average of 80.15 on the season over 20 rounds of play. Bartell carded a low round 74 on the year twice and recorded three top-25 place finishes overall.
Like her fellow classmate in Bartell, Lewis also earned her first Academic All-MAC selection just a year after being named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll in 2013-14. Lewis, who shot a career low round of 72 twice on the year, is a business administration major with a concentration in accounting. The Michigan native played in 10 events for the Falcons on the year, including at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge, and posted a stroke average of 80.15 on the season over 20 rounds of play. The junior finished in a tie for 13th overall at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational and in a tie for 22nd at the Cardinal Classic.
Diehl continued her improvement on both the golf course and in the classroom to earn her first conference academic honor of her career. The entrepreneurship major played in four tournaments for the Falcons, posting a stroke average of 82.00 over nine rounds of play on the year. The junior turned in a low round 78 twice en route to a career best season stroke average.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
