FORT WORTH, Texas—Bowling Green State University quarterback Matt Johnson continues to bring home the accolades this week, following his historic performance in a road win at Maryland over the weekend. Today, Johnson was named as the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week.
Johnson's historic performance led Bowling Green to a 48-27 win on the road in College Park, Md. Saturday against the University of Maryland. The Falcons put up 692 total yards and 42 second-half points in the win. It was the second straight season in which the Falcons have defeated a Big Ten Conference opponent.
In the win, Johnson passed for a career-high 491 yards and six touchdowns. It was his second consecutive 400-yard performance passing. He now leads the nation with 915 total passing yards through two weeks. The 491 yards were the second-most in school history for a single game, while his six scoring strikes were tied for the most in school history.
Johnson is the first quarterback in BGSU's 96-year football history to ever pass for 400-or-more yards in back-to-back games, and joins Brian McClure (1983) as the only quarterback to ever accomplish that feat more than once in a season.
The native of Harrisburg, Pa., is the first weekly winner from a non-Power 5 Conference school since East Carolina's Shane Carden on Sept. 16, 2014.
All 128 FBS quarterbacks are eligible for the weekly honor, which is determined by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee. Honorable mention quarterbacks in week two included: Connor Cook (Michigan State), Luke Falk (Washington State), Jared Goff (California), Kevin Hogan (Stanford), Chad Kelly (Ole Miss), DeShone Kizer (Notre Dame), Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) and Greg Ward Jr. (Houston).
The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award winner will be announced on Dec. 10 during ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards. The winner is not required to have won a weekly award during the season. A list of 16 semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 2, while the three finalists will be named on Nov. 24.
