Johnson Named Maxwell Award National Player Of The Week
September 17, 2015 | Football
Bowling Green State University quarterback Matt Johnson continues to bring home the accolades this week, following his historic performance in a road win at Maryland over the weekend. Today, Johnson was named as the Maxwell Award National Player of the Week.
Â
This week, Johnson has been honored as Maxwell Award National Player of the Week, Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week, CFPA National Player of the Week, and MAC East Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
Johnson's historic performance led Bowling Green to a 48-27 win on the road in College Park, Md. Saturday against the University of Maryland. The Falcons put up 692 total yards and 42 second-half points in the win. It was the second straight season in which the Falcons have defeated a Big Ten Conference opponent.
Â
In the win, Johnson passed for a career-high 491 yards and six touchdowns. It was his second consecutive 400-yard performance passing. He now leads the nation with 915 total passing yards through two weeks. The 491 yards were the second-most in school history for a single game, while his six scoring strikes were tied for the most in school history.
Â
Johnson is the first quarterback in BGSU's 96-year football history to ever pass for 400-or-more yards in back-to-back games, and joins Brian McClure (1983) as the only quarterback to ever accomplish that feat more than once in a season.
Â
Johnson and the Falcons continue their season this weekend when they host Memphis at Doyt L. Perry Stadium. The Falcons and Tigers will kickoff at 3:00 p.m. in a game televised by American Sports Network.
