Successful Start At BGSU Invitational For Women's Tennis

Bowling Green, Ohio –The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team is off to a successful start at the BGSU Invitational.

Freshman Polina Radeva, sophomore Emily Witt, freshman Paula Comella Aguilo and the duo of senior Drew Fillis / Comella will all be competing in the championship round on Saturday.

"We had a great first day overall," Head Coach Olga Elkin said. "I saw a lot of good tennis from all of the girls today and we have girls in the finals of the one, two, and three flights. Overall I am very happy with what I saw today."

Doubles began Friday morning at Perrysburg Tennis Center due to rain. In the first flight Comella and Fillis defeated Toledo's Huck/Thai 6-0. In the second round they beat Altansarnai/Hahn of UIC 6-3. The pair will go against Evansville's Darzyan/Crasta in the top flight doubles championship.

Radeva/Witt made it through the first round of doubles in the second flight beating Manole/Le Comber of UIC 6-1 before being defeated by Mazzola/Bowman of Toledo 6-3. Radeva/Witt will fight for third place against Wright State's Verstrepen/Turner.

Antonina Farrar and Leeah Floyd lost in the first and second round of flight 3 double and will go against Mendes/Helpingstine of Evansville tomorrow for a 7^th place finish.

Singles were played on Keefe Courts Friday afternoon. In the first flight Radeva defeated Marina Mereno of Evansville 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. She then went on to beat UIC's Jackie Altansrnzi 6-1, 7-6(4) in the second round. Radeva will take on Sidnay Huck of Toledo Saturday in the top flight championship.

"It's always great playing at home on your home courts," Elkin said. "We love playing at home, and don't get to do so very much in the spring, so it's great when we can get out here! The girls were loud and supportive of each other and that's always very important to me."

The second flight Comella crushed Bobbi Medesto of IUPUI 6-0, 6-0. She took on Toledo's Lauren Thai in the second round Friday afternoon defeating her 7-5, 6-1. Comella will face Valeryia Kulikovskaya of Detroit in the championship round.

In flight three singles Witt defeated Samantha Mayer of IUPUI 6-3, 6-1. She was victorious against Evansville's Doreen Crasta winning 7-6(4), 7-6(3). Witt will battle it out with Melika LeBlanc of UIC tomorrow in the championship round.

Farrar, Floyd and Fillis will compete for 7^th place tomorrow in their singles flights.

The Falcons begin play tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. on Keefe Courts.
