Falcons Take Fourth Overall at Cardinal Classic; Tie 54-hole Record

Yorktown, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team had two golfers finish in the top-15 individually to lead the Falcons to a fourth-place team finish with a 54-hole team score of 903, +39, at the 2015 Cardinal Classic hosted by Ball State University at the par 72, 6,204-yards course at The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind.
BGSU was consistent throughout the three rounds of play, carding rounds of 300, 301 and 302 to finish just out of the top-three with a combined team score of 903, +39. The Falcons 54-hole score of 903 is tied for the lowest 54-hole team score in BGSU women's golf history. The 54-hole score of 903 matches the BGSU 54-hole team score record set at the 2013 Redbird Invitational.
"Coach Powers and I are most proud of the improved play around the greens from last week," stated head coach Stephanie Young. "That really helped us and made the difference."
Junior Mikayla Baer posted her second straight round of 73, +1, on Tuesday to climb into 14th-place overall with a 54-hole score of 223, +7. Baer's tournament score of 223, +7, is a new career-low 54-hole score as a Falcon, as she finished the two-day event with a team-high nine birdies, which placed her in a tie for sixth overall in the tournament field in birdies, and a total of 31 pars overall. The junior finished in a tie for fifth-place over the entire tournament field with a par 5 scoring average of 4.67, -3 under par.
Senior Hannah Lewis turned in a final round of 77, +5, to go along with rounds of 72, even par, and 75, +3, to finish in a tie for 15th-place overall with her 54-hole score of 224, +8. Lewis tallied eight birdies and 32 pars over her three rounds of play to post the lowest 54-hole score of her career at BGSU.
Carding a final round of 78, +6, on Tuesday was both Fran Rodriguez and Erin Fahey who each finished in a tie for 24th-place overall with identical 54-hole scores of 230, +14. Rodriguez shot rounds of 76, 76 and 78 for the tournament, while Fahey registered scores of 75, 77 and 78 overall.
Rodriguez finished with five birdies and 32 pars, while Fahey, whose 54-hole score of 230 is a BGSU career-low for the freshman, ended her two days of play with five birdies and 33 pars overall. The junior, along with Lewis, finished with a par 5 scoring average of 5.00, even par, for the event.
Saving her best for last, senior Lily Bartell shot a final round 74, +2, on Tuesday to move up 16 places overall and into a tie for 34th-place overall with her 54-hole score of 232, +16. Bartell, who carded one birdie and 14 pars over the third round of play, totaled four birdies and 33 pars over the three rounds of play.
As a team, the Falcons finished fourth overall in the tournament field with 161 pars and ranked fifth with 31 birdies. BGSU also ranked fifth with a par 5 team scoring average of 5.04, +2, over the three rounds of play.
Despite shooting a score of 295, +7, over the final round of play, Eastern Kentucky ran away with the team title with a 54-hole team score of 867, +3. The Colonels finished 13 strokes ahead of second-place Eastern Michigan who finished with a score of 880, +16.
Now halfway through the fall season, the Falcons will return to competition in two weeks at the Rocket Classic on Oct. 5-6 at the Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton, Ohio.
