The 2013 MAC Champion will begin his first year as the staff's volunteer assistant for the 2016 season.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Head baseball coach Danny Schmitz has announced the hiring of newly appointed volunteer assistant baseball coach, Jeremy Shay. A former Falcon standout and 2013 MAC Champion, Shay returns to his alma mater to work with the catchers.
"We are really excited for the opportunity to bring Jeremy back to BGSU as our Volunteer Assistant Coach," Schmitz began. "He had an outstanding career at BGSU, and played a huge role on our 2013 MAC Championship team."
After playing for Bowling Green from 2011-14, Shay spent last year as a coaching intern on the Divine Child High School baseball staff. Shay won a pair of state championships as a player at DCHS in 2008 and 2010.
"Having three former players on our coaching staff, who all won MAC Championships during their time here at BGSU, is truly special," Schmitz continued. "There is no doubt that Jeremy will continue to have a positive impact within our program. We are looking forward to seeing him work with our student-athletes throughout the season."
Shay will coach with Rick Blanc and his brother, Ryan Shay, under Schmitz's guidance in 2016. Schmitz will be entering his 26th season at the helm of the Orange and Brown in the spring.
Shay appeared in 186 games as a Falcon, registering 187 hits, 112 RBI and 16 home runs, while finishing with a .298 career batting average. As a junior in 2013, Shay won the Triple Crown over the course of the MAC schedule, leading the conference with a .400 batting average to go along with 28 RBI and five home runs.
After winning the MAC Championship, BGSU competed in the Louisville Regional. Shay hit a home run to give Bowling Green a 1-0 in the regional opener against the host Cardinals. Shay was named to the Regional All-Tournament team at first base. As a senior in 2014, he led the Falcons in runs (32) and doubles (13), while hitting .312 with a .445 slugging percentage. Shay also led BGSU that year with 12 multiple-RBI ballgames.
"I am very excited to be back with the Bowling Green baseball program," said Shay. "I get to work with and learn from a great coaching staff, and I'm excited to be able to help these student-athletes."
The Falcons are currently in the midst of their fall schedule, which will be concluded with the annual Orange and Brown World Series in October. Game one of the series is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15.
