BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University football team fought valiantly but saw it's 17-game winning streak against the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division come to an end with a 30-24 loss at Ohio University on Saturday, Oct. 8. James Morgan threw two touchdown passes, and Fred Coppet ran in another in BGSU's first defeat at Peden Stadium in six years.
The game began slowly on offense for the Falcons. The team took the opening kickoff into Ohio territory but was forced to punt. Joe Davidson's boot was fair caught at the Ohio 10, and the Bowling Green defense held the Bobcats to just three plays. However, on BGSU's next offensive play, Josh Cleveland fumbled to flip field position.
Ohio marched into field goal range after the fumble before stalling, and Louis Zervos' 45-yard kick gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
On the next drive, Morgan threw an interception for another turnover in Ohio territory. This time, the Bobcats took the ball 58 yards and capped the possession with a 17-yard scamper up the middle from Maleek Irons. Ohio had a 10-0 lead just 1:20 into the second quarter.
The Falcons' offense finally put points on the board after Ohio's touchdown. Morgan led the team on a five-play, 66-yard drive that include completions of 15 and 28 yards to Ronnie Moore and an eight-yard touchdown run from Fred Coppet.
The Bobcats responded with two more scores before halftime. Greg Windham completions of 20 and 15 yards followed a Morgan interception; the latter was a scoring pass to Sebastian Smith. After a BGSU punt, Windham led a 70-yard drive that ended with Irons' second touchdown of the game. Ohio led 23-7 at halftime.
Both teams punted to start the second half. The Falcons' punt was a career-long 79-yard bomb from Davidson that buried Ohio at its own 10 yard line. On the next play, Windham was intercepted by Brandon Harris. It was Harris' second pick of the season and third of his career.
Jake Suder converted the turnover into three points with a 19-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 23-10. Unfortunately, Ohio drove 75 yards following the kickoff, and Windham's five yard touchdown run gave them a 30-10 advantage.
The Falcons answered before the end of the third quarter. A 38-yard run from Josh Cleveland got them into scoring position, and Morgan connected with Teo Redding on 4th-and-goal for a 13-yard touchdown.
BGSU had another chance to score early in the fourth quarter but could not convert on fourth down at the Ohio 4. Finally, with 1:24 left in the game, Morgan threw a prayer into the end zone on 4th-and-27 from the Ohio 37. Scott Miller caught the ricochet and dove into the end zone for a touchdown and the final 30-24 margin.
Bowling Green posted 367 yards of offense, including a career-high 253 yards passing from James Morgan. The defense allowed a season-best 388 yards and 203 passing yards.
Coppet finished with 66 yards and a touchdown, while Cleveland added 65 yards on the ground. Miller had 106 all-purpose yards and a touchdown, and Redding posted 54 yards and a score on a career-high six catches.
Ronnie Moore's three catches gave him a 36-game streak with at least one catch, third-most in BGSU history and the eighth-longest active streak in FBS. His 76 receiving yards moved him into eighth place on the Falcons' all-time list.
BGSU drops to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in MAC play, while Ohio improves to 4-2 (2-0). The Falcons take the field again next Saturday (Oct. 15) at 3:30 p.m., when they play the Battle of I-75 at the Glass Bowl in Toledo, Ohio. The game will be broadcast on the American Sports Network and ESPN3.
