MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – In a hard fought overtime final of 2-1, the Bowling Green women's soccer (7-7-0, 2-4-0 MAC) team fell to Central Michigan (12-1-1, 4-1-1 MAC) in Mid-American Conference play Sunday afternoon.
"This was such a tough loss today and I couldn't ask anymore from the players in terms of how we competed," Bowling Green women's soccer head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "We were two minutes away from beating a very good CMU team, but will make a choice to learn on a loss."
The pair of MAC rivals were scoreless until just over 10 minutes remained in regulation time, before the Falcons took the lead 1-0. Freshman Maureen Kennedy earned her fourth goal of the season off of a penalty kick opportunity at 79:36 into the matchup. It was the second penalty kick for the Falcons this season, and Kennedy was successful in the first one as well.
Standing out at the backlines for the Falcons was freshman goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve, who notched 11 saves on the day. The Sylvania, Ohio native faced 23 shots by the Chippewas and earned herself an .846 save percentage over the course of 99:50 minutes of play. Duwve's 11 saves marks a new career-high for the freshman, topping her former season-high of nine saves, tallied at Navy on Sept. 11.
Offensively, the Falcons tallied 12 total shots, while six landed on goal. Redshirt sophomore Erica Hubert led the way with three attempted shots, while freshman Sam Howshar, junior Madison Schupbach and Kennedy each marked two on the day.
Central Michigan got on the board with just 2:01 left in regulation to tie up the game at one and force the overtime play. It was then with only 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime that the Chippewas notched the game-winner for the 2-1 win.
"I thought Duwve played a great game and we saw her confidence growing as the game went on," Coach Basalyga added. "I think soccer wise, we are in a good place heading into next weekend and we're going to have to find a way to earn some points to stay in the hunt for the MAC tournament."
The Bowling Green women's soccer program will resume action on Friday, Oct. 14 when it faces Ball State on the road. The 4 p.m. conference matchup will be broadcast on ESPN3 from Muncie, Ind. The Falcons will then continue MAC play Sunday, Oct. 16 by taking on Miami in Oxford, Ohio.
