Greene, Santoro Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
November 28, 2016 | Football, General, Women's Basketball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are football player Trent Greene and women's basketball player Carly Santoro.
Male Athlete of the Week
Trent Greene, a senior from Miami Gardens, Fla., had two quarterback sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a pass break-up, three tackles for loss and eight total tackles in a 27-19 win over Buffalo. Greene disrupted Buffalo's offensive rhythm all afternoon, beginning with a second quarter sack on third down that stalled out one Bulls drive. On Buffalo's first possession of the second half, with the Bulls trailing just 14-12, Greene had a strip sack, recovering the fumble, and setting up a field goal that put Bowling Green ahead 17-12. He then added a game-saving tackle for loss as Buffalo had first and goal at the one-yard line with just nine seconds to play. The Bulls were unable to recover and could not punch in a touchdown that would have given them an opportunity to tie with a two-point conversion.
Female Athlete of the Week
Carly Santoro, a sophomore from Bellevue, Ohio, led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding during a perfect 2-0 week. She averaged 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in wins over Lafayette and Saint Peter's, as BGSU wrapped up play in the Naismith Basketball Memorial Hall of Fame Challenge. She had five points, seven rebounds and two assists in BG's 69-42 victory vs. Lafayette, playing just 17 minutes. Then, on Sunday, Santoro was named the game's Most Valuable Player after exploding for career-high totals in multiple categories vs. Saint Peter's. Santoro shattered her career best with 28 points in the 73-68 win over the Peacocks at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. She had her second double-double of the season, matching her career high with 12 rebounds, and she also set a career standard with four steals. Santoro also set new career marks in field goals made (10) and attempted (18) and minutes played (40), and she added two assists in the win.
