BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Freshman Dylan Frye scored a career-high 18 points, while also knocking down a career-best four three-pointers, as the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team defeated Detroit Mercy, 74-61, Saturday (Dec. 10) afternoon at the Stroh Center. The Falcons have now won four-consecutive games at the Stroh Center. BGSU erased a seven-point deficit at the half by outscoring UMD, 43-23, over the final 20 minutes.
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 4-6 on the young season. Detroit Mercy has now lost nine-straight games. The Titans fall to 1-9 in 2016-17 with the loss.
Along with his 18 points, Frye added three rebounds and a career-high three assists. He shot 7-for-11 from the floor, including a 4-for-7 mark from distance.
Fellow freshman Rodrick Caldwell also established a new career high in points, as he shot 3-for-7 on field goal attempts and scored 13 points. His 13 points breaks his previous career high of 10, which he set last game at Evansville (Dec. 6).
Senior Wes Alcegaire finished second on the team in scoring with 16 points. Alcegaire, who shot 6-of-13 from the floor, also had a career-high four assists and three rebounds. The senior has scored 15-plus points in three of the last four games.
Senior Zack Denny scored in double figures for the eighth-consecutive game. Denny had 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists. Denny also hit a three-pointer, and has now made at least one triple in each of the past seven games. Matt Fox extended his three-point field goal streak to six games, as the junior finished with five points and two steals.
Sophomores Demajeo Wiggins and Rasheed Worrell scored five points apiece. Wiggins had a career-high four blocked shots, as well as four rebounds, one assist, and his first steal of the season. Worrell had six rebounds, two assists and one steal.
After Detroit Mercy scored the first bucket of the second half, which bumped its advantage up to nine points at 40-31 at the 18:38 mark, the Falcons went on a 16-0 run. Over that 16-0 run, the Orange and Brown held Detroit Mercy scoreless for 6:55. Over that span, the Titans went 0-for-8 from the floor and committed five turnovers.
With the Falcons down, 40-31, Caldwell, Alcegaire and Denny hit consecutive threes to even the score at 40-40. Denny followed with a jumper, and then Caldwell converted a layup, prior to a Frye triple, which concluded the 16-0 run and gave the Falcons a 47-40 lead.
Final exams at BGSU begin on Monday (Dec. 12), so the Falcons won't play again until Dec. 18 at San Jose State University. The tip is slated for 5 p.m. ET. Bowling Green will then return to the Stroh Center to conclude the non-conference schedule with games versus Alabama A&M (Dec. 22) and Norfolk State (Dec. 30).
