Falcons Win Fifth-Straight Home Game Behind Frye’s 16 Points And Wiggins’ Double-Double

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team led for over 30 minutes of play, and cruised to a 74-61 victory over Alabama A&M University on Thursday afternoon at the Stroh Center. The Falcons have now won five-consecutive games at the Stroh Center. Bowling Green totaled 70-plus points for the eighth time in 2016-17.

Sophomore Demajeo Wiggins recorded the second double-double of his career, as he had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Dylan Frye led BGSU in scoring with 16 points. Frye tied a career high by hitting four three-pointers. The freshman went 6-for-11 from the field, and 4-for-7 from deep, while also adding three rebounds and one assist.

After a tight first half of play, the Falcons ended the first half on a 13-2 run to take a 38-30 lead into the break. Bowling Green led by double digits for a majority of the second half before settling for the 74-61 win. The Falcons held Alabama A&M to 36.8 percent (21-of-51) shooting, while Bowling Green shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69) for the game.

The Bulldogs had a huge advantage in points at the free throw line, as Alabama A&M went 14-for-19 (73.7 percent). Bowling Green shot just 35.7 percent from the line by making 5-of-14 attempts. However, the Orange and Brown made four more three-pointers than Alabama A&M, and finished the game 9-for-25 (36.0 percent) from distance. The Bulldogs shot 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from three-point land.
Wes Alcegaire finished with 15 points, two rebounds and one assist. Alcegaire has now scored 15-plus points in five of the last six ballgames. Over that six-game stretch, Alcegaire is shooting 52.3 percent (34-of-65) from the field. The senior from Miami, Florida leads the team in scoring at 13.1 points per contest.

Senior Zack Denny scored in double figures for the 10th-straight game. After scoring four points in the second half, Denny notched seven in the second half to finish with 11 points. He finished the game 5-for-12 from the field, and hit a three-pointer for the ninth-consecutive game. Denny is just two triples shy of moving into a 10th place tie for most three-point field goals in program history.

Wiggins scored his 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting. He had six offensive rebounds and six defensive rebounds. Wiggins has now had two double-doubles in the past four games, as he scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds at Evansville on Dec. 6. The sophomore from Toledo, Ohio has now had four games this season with 10-plus rebounds, and five games with 10-plus points.

Sophomore Antwon Lillard had an extremely balanced and productive afternoon. Lillard scored seven points on 3-of-6 shooting, while also adding six rebounds, a career-high five assists, and three steals. His three steals tied a career high. Lillard also bumped up his three-point percentage for the second-straight game by connecting on 1-of-2 attempts.

Senior Ismail Ali had six assists, two points, two rebounds and two steals. The senior, who ranks second in the MAC in assists per game (5.6 APG), has now had six-plus assists in six of the past seven contests. Freshman Rodrick Caldwell and sophomore Rasheed Worrell each had four points, respectively.

Freshman Justin Turner made his collegiate debut after recovering from an injury he sustained in the exhibition games versus Capital University. Turner's first-career shot attempt was a triple, and he nailed it. He finished the game with five points in 12 minutes while shooting 2-for-3 from the floor.

Bowling Green will conclude the non-conference schedule with a Dec. 30 matchup at the Stroh Center versus Norfolk State. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. tip. The Falcons will then begin Mid-American Conference play with two road games against Akron (Jan. 3) and Ball State (Jan. 7).
