Giammarino's Walk-Off Double Gives BGSU Saturday Split
March 12, 2016 | Softball
Freshmen gets the game-winning hit in her second collegiate start
In BG's first game of the day, the Falcons fell to Hartford by a 4-2 final. Following Saturday's split, BGSU is now 10-10 on the season.
Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Raker continued her hot hitting, with a pair of hits in each of Saturday's games. Giammarino had the first two hits of her career in the Fairfield game, and walked three times on Saturday. She made her first collegiate start in the Hartford game and was back in the lineup vs. Fairfield.
Junior Briana Combs picked up the win in relief vs. the Stags, improving to 2-3 on the season. Combs made relief appearances in both Saturday contests.

"The win against Fairfield was a true team effort," said Falcon coach Sarah Willis. "We got contributions from everyone in the lineup, and from Brooke Parker and Briana Combs on the mound. It was great to see the team pull out the win in extra innings. Combs did a great job in relief, and Hannah was clutch at the plate."
In the opener, Lexi Wilkerson picked up the complete-game win for the Hawks, allowing just one earned run and six hits. She did walk six Falcons and hit a pair of batters, but Wilkerson struck out six as well.
Sawyer Fried and Danielle DeMarco each had two hits for UH, with DeMarco scoring twice and driving in two runs. Alex Saharek also had a pair of RBI.
After Falcon freshman Kiley Sosby retired the side in order in the top of the first, the Falcons jumped on top in the bottom of the inning. Junior Aspen Searle led off with a single, and took second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Katee Hinkle. Raker followed with a single that scored Searle for a 1-0 BG lead.
Sosby escaped a second-inning jam, as a walk and a pair of hit batters loaded the bases with two down. But, the Falcon freshman got Kylie Dazalla to hit a ground ball to shortstop Searle, who stepped on the second-base bag to retire Saharek for the third out.
The Hawks tied the game in the fourth, on a leadoff homer by DeMarco. Hartford threatened to take the lead, as the next three batters reached base. Elizabeth Newkirk walked, but was caught stealing for the first out. Then, Marisa Ferguson singled, and Saharek drew a base on balls. A passed ball advanced the runners to second and third, and prompted the Falcons to bring senior Braiden Dillow into the game.
Dillow struck out Dazalla, but Peyton Fisher walked to load the bases. Dillow, however, picked up her second strikeout of the frame, getting Jenice Aloyo looking, and the Falcons were out of the inning.
In the fifth inning, however, the Hawks would take the lead for good. Fried singled, and advanced to second on Wilkerson's bunt. DeMarco singled to plate Fried, with DeMarco advancing to second on the throw home. Dillow whiffed Newkirk for out number two, but Ferguson walked and Saharek followed with a double to left-center that scored a pair of teammates. Dazella hit a fly ball to left to end the half-inning, but the Hawks had a three-run lead.
BGSU cut into the deficit in the bottom of the inning. Hinkle walked, and a single by Raker put runners at the corners. Pinch-runner Alex Sorgi then stole second, with Hinkle trotting home on an error by the shortstop. But, Wilkerson retired the next three Falcons on a pair of fly balls to center, wrapped around a popup to second.
Combs came on in relief, and retired all six batters she faced. But, the Falcons could not narrow the gap any further, despite getting three baserunner over the final two frames.
In the sixth, junior Trista Mokienko was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, and senior Molly Holliday singled with one out, putting runners at the corners. But, a strikeout and a popup ended the threat.
The seventh inning saw junior Haley Schrock hit a two-out double, but a strikeout ended the contest and gave the Hawks the victory.
Sosby allowed one run and three hits in three-plus innings of work, while Dillow surrendered three runs and three hits in relief. Combs retired all six batters she faced, getting three strikeouts and three ground-ball outs. The three Falcon pitchers had three strikeouts apiece.
In the second game, the Brown and Orange took the lead with a four-run second inning, but the Stags battled back to tie the contest before Giammarino won it in extra innings.
The big blow in that second inning was a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double by Searle. With one down, Dillow walked, and sophomore Morgan Evangelista singled. A walk to Giammarino loaded the bases, and when Holliday was hit by a pitch, Dillow trotted home to tie the game. Fairfield had taken the lead in the top of the inning on a double by Courtney Hankins and a single off the bat of Nicole Capra.
Following Holliday's HBP, Searle came to the plate with the bases loaded and promptly cleared them with her three-run two-bagger that gave the Brown and Orange a 4-1 advantage.
The Stags got a run back in the third, as Kristen Ball doubled with one out, and a two-out double by Gianna Kinhofer brought her home.
The Falcons responded in the bottom of the inning. Senior Marisa Shook walked, and she advanced to third on a double by Schrock. Fairfield pitcher Madison Roberts, who had entered the game the previous inning in relief of starter Lauren Falkanger, got a strikeout of the next batter, but a passed ball scored Shook for a 5-2 lead.
Fairfield, though, plated a pair of fifth-inning runs. Tori Reed singled with one out, and Kate Robinson drew a walk. Parker, the Falcons' starting pitcher in the game, got a fly ball to left that produced the second out, But, Hankins followed with a double that scored a pair of runs to cut BG's lead to one run. After a BG error put runners at the corners, Combs entered the game and got Capra to hit an inning-ending grounder to short.
BG extended the lead with a run in the fifth. Schrock walked, then took second on Dillow's sacrifice bunt. Evangelista's grounder moved Schrock to third, where Giammarino's first collegiate hit allowed the senior to trot home to give the Falcons a 6-4 lead.
But, the sixth inning saw pinch-hitter Alisha Marshall and Lauren Felicia pick up back-to-back singles, and after Felicia stole second, a grounder by Ball moved the runners along, with Marshall scoring. Back-to-back bases on balls to Reed and Robinson loaded the bases, and a fielder's choice allowed Felicia to score the tying run, as BG's only play was at third base.
With runners at second and third and the score now tied, Combs got Karisa Hughen to hit a grounder to the left side, and shortstop Searle whipped the ball to third baseman Raker to cut down Kinhofer for the third out.
BG got only a Raker single in the sixth, and the Falcons were retired in order in the seventh. But, after Combs had worked a one-two-three inning in the top of the seventh, she kept the Stags off of the scoreboard in the eighth as well.
In that eighth inning, the international tiebreaker rules were used, with a runner placed on second. Ball's sac bunt sent Felicia to third. But, on a bunt by Reed, Combs fielded the ball and fired home to Evangelista, who may or may not have said, "Bye, Felicia" as she applied the tag for out number two. Then, Combs got Robinson to hit a grounder to short for the third out.
Evangelista was placed on second to start the BG half of the eighth, and Sorgi was inserted as a pinch-runner. Giammarino quickly ended the contest, with a double off of Roberts that sent her classmate around third base and across the plate with the winning run.
Giammarino and Raker each had a pair of hits in the win, with Giammarino adding a walk, a run and two RBI. Seven different Falcons scored a run in the win, while Searle led the way with three RBI.
Felicia, Hankins and Capra all had two hits for the Stags, who pounded out 10 hits as a team. Hankins and Kinhofer each drove in a pair of teammates.
Combs picked up the win in relief, with three-and-a-third innings of two-run, two-hit ball. She walked two batters and struck out one.
The Falcons will conclude weekend play on Sunday morning (March 13), taking on South Dakota in a 9:00 a.m. start.
