March 06, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis team is traveling south to Orlando, Fla. for a pair of matches this week to finish up the non-conference portion of their schedule. The Orange and Brown will face Richmond Monday at 10 a.m. at the Star Island tennis facility.
Then, on Thursday, the Falcons will take on the Coyotes of South Dakota at 8 a.m. at the Lake Cane tennis facility.
A week ago, freshmen Polina Radeva and Paula Comella along with senior Drew Fillis picked up singles wins for the Falcons in the loss to Chicago State Saturday. Capturing the only doubles win were Fillis and Comella who led Bryttish Burts and Gamboa the entire match and went on to defeat the duo, 6-2.
The Falcons faced No. 67 Michigan State Sunday. Radeva and junior Leeah Floyd were making their way back from a 3-0 deficit against Davina Nguyen and Athena Trouillot. Radeva and Floyd's match went unfinished at 4-2 when the Spartans locked up the doubles point. Comella and freshman Marina Ferrero battled in singles play, but came up empty-handed against the Spartans.
Richmond enters the week with an overall record of 4-3. The Spiders have defeated Radford, George Mason, Longwood and Navy. One of their three losses was to No. 41 Virginia Tech. A year ago, Richmond went 11-6 overall. The Spiders earned the number two seed at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Richmond defeated Dayton, 4-3, to make their way to the third round where they were defeated by UMASS, 4-0.
The Falcons have never met Richmond in women's tennis.
South Dakota has a 4-6 record on the season. The Coyotes have lost to one ranked opponent in No. 56 Minnesota, 6-1. The Falcons last played South Dakota during the 2009-10 campaign. The Orange and Brown blanked the Coyotes, 7-0, in the only match between the two teams. Last year, South Dakota went 8-11 overall and made it to the second round of the Summit League Championship after defeating IUPUI, 4-2.
Following this week's matches, BG will return to Ohio to prepare for the Mid-American Conference opener. The Falcons will travel to DeKalb, Ill. to face Northern Illinois on Friday, March 25.
