Columbus, Ohio – The Bowling Green men's golf team battled extreme cold, wind, snow flurries and a number of schedule changes on Saturday to shoot a team score of 304, +20, over the first round of play at the 2016 Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
The two-day tournament was originally slated for 54 holes of play with 36 holes scheduled for Saturday, April 9. However, late in the week with the forecast of cold and inclement weather, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes of play with 18 holes on each day.
The original tee-times of 10:30 a.m. ET were pushed back first to 1:30 p.m. and then again to 2:30 p.m. as Friday night's weather, the temperatures on Saturday morning and the wet conditions of the golf course were not conducive to the student-athletes set to tee-off.
"It was less than ideal conditions to play in to say the least," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "It was cold, wet and windy. There was some rain, hail and snow flurries as well. Our guys fought through the elements and played well. We are still in striking distance of finishing in the top-five in a very strong tournament, so I'm pleased with that. We need to focus tomorrow and stay mentally tough in order to compete."
With a highly competitive field, which includes five top-50 nationally ranked programs, and a number of weather and wet playing conditions throughout the day, the Falcons ended day one in 10th-place overall on the team leaderboard with a round of 304, +20.
BGSU sits ahead of six other teams in Liberty (307), Dayton (308), Southern Illinois (309), Eastern Michigan (310), Northwestern (314) and Wright State (321).
Leading the Falcons on Saturday was junior Brett Rinker with a round of 73, +2, to place him in a tie for ninth-place overall. Rinker tallied three birdies, 10 pars and five bogeys over his 18-hole round.
One stroke behind Rinker was Pablo Heredia Iglesias with a score of 74, +3. The Falcon freshman ended his day with one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys to place in a tie for 23rd overall heading into the final round of play on Sunday.
BGSU's Jose Narro carded a round of 76, +5, on Saturday to place in a tie for 40th overall. After getting off to a slow start with six bogeys over his first seven holes, the junior finished his first round out strong with six straight pars, a birdie on No. 18, and then four more birdies to finish the day with a total of one birdie and 11 pars overall.
Sophomore Cameron Michalak shot an opening round 81, +10, while fellow Falcon Trey Walker turned in a round of 82, +11, on Saturday. Michalak carded nine pars to place in a tie for 75th overall, while Walker had a more up-and-down round with one birdie and eight pars to conclude day one in a tie for 79th.
No. 31 UNLV leads the tournament field after 18 holes of play with a team score of 289, +5. In second is host Ohio State at 291, +7, while No. 37 UAB and No. 49 Michigan State are tied for third-place at 293, +9.
Rounding out the top-five on the team leaderboard is No. 46 Kent State and No. 29 Penn State who are tied for fifth overall with matching scores of 299, +15.
The final round of play is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. ET start time tomorrow morning – weather permitting.
