Bowling Green, Ohio – The BGSU men's golf team is slated to play in not one, but two events over a four-day span from April 9-12 as the Falcons will compete at the 2016 Robert Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio on April 9-10, before heading east to co-host the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational with Marshall at the Greenbrier on April 11-12 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
"This is a strategy I have seen other mid-major teams due over the last few years in playing in back-to-back events," commented head coach Kevin Farrell. "We are currently ranked as the second-highest team in the MAC and this is a great way to carry momentum over to the next tournament if we play well. However, it is a double edge sword because if we play bad at Ohio State then it could hurt us at the Greenbrier. Also the MAC Championships at the end of April will consist of four rounds and 72 holes of play, so this is a great way to prepare ourselves to put together four good rounds of golf."
The 2016 Robert Kepler Intercollegiate will take place on Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10, at the par-71, 7,455-yards Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club. Originally slated for 54-holes, the two-day event has been shortened to 36-holes and will consist of 18 holes of play each day due to the forecast of inclement weather.
The tournament field will include a total of 16 teams in Bowling Green, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Liberty, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Southern Illinois, UAB, UNLV, West Virginia and Wright State.
Each day of play will begin with a 10:30 a.m. ET shotgun start.
Live scoring will be available at www.Golfstat.com.
"It will be really cold this weekend which we need to take advantage of since we have practiced in this all winter long," continued Farrell. "It will be a really tough challenge for us because the course will be long and wet over both days of play. But this will also be a great opportunity for us to compete and beat some bigger schools, as long as we stay focused and play to what the course gives us."
The Falcons will then turnaround to co-host the third annual Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, April 11-12, at the par-70, 7,287-yards Old White TPC Golf Course at The Greenbrier – America's Resort.
The 54-hole event will consist of 36 holes and two rounds on Monday, April 11, and will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday, April 12.
The event has grown to a 17 team field this year including Delaware, East Tennessee State, Eastern Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State, Morehead State, Northern Kentucky, Ohio, Old Dominion, Siena, St. Bonaventure, Towson, Western Carolina, Western Kentucky, William & Mary, Youngstown State, Marshall and BGSU.
Each day of play will begin with a 9 a.m. ET shotgun start at the Greenbrier.
Live scoring will be available at www.birdiefire.com.
"We are once again excited to host the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational for a third straight year," Farrell said. "This year we have 17 teams competing and a number of donors coming to the event, which gives us great representation. We are the second-highest ranked team in the field, so we expect to and can certainly compete for the championship."
For both tournaments, Coach Farrell will send out the lineup of Jose Narro, Brett Rinker, Pablo Heredia Iglesias, Cameron Michalak and Trey Walker.
Narro will be teeing-off for the Falcons at the No. 1 spot again this weekend after having competed last week at the 68th annual Azalea Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina from Mar. 31 to Apr. 3. The junior, who finished in a tie for 24th with rounds of 69, 68, 74 and 75 for a 72-hole score of 286, +2, at the prestigious amateur event, has posted a stroke average of 73.13 over eight events for the Falcons this season. Narro enters BGSU's next two tournaments with seven top-30 finishes and a total of seven sub-par rounds on the year, including a third-place finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational held in West Virginia back in September. The Tampico, Mexico native took medalist honors with a first-place finish with a score of 206, -4 under par, in the inaugural Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational in 2014.
At the No. 2 position for the Falcons will be Rinker, who like Narro, also competed last week at the Azalea Invitational picking up a 38th-place finish with rounds of 73, 67, 75 and 74 for a 72-hole tournament score of 289, +5. Rinker, who has played at the No. 3 spot all season long for the Falcons, leads the team with a stroke average of 72.96 over 23 rounds of golf on the year. In 2015-16, he has posted seven top-30 finishes and seven sub-par rounds, including a second-place finish at the Mountaineer Intercollegiate in West Virginia in October. Rinker also finished in a tie for fourth-place overall with a 54-hole score of 216, +6, at the first-ever Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational as a freshman in 2014.
Playing in his ninth and 10th straight events this weekend will be freshman Heredia Iglesias. Having played at the No. 2 spot all season long, Heredia Iglesias will compete for BGSU at the No. 3 slot from April 9-12. Heredia Iglesias, who placed in a tie for 51st overall with rounds of 72, 72, 72 and 75 for a combined score of 291, +7, at the Azalea Invitational one week ago, is third on the team with a stroke average of 74.26 over 23 rounds of play for the Falcons this year.
Returning to the lineup at the No. 4 position is Michalak. After sitting out of the Falcons' last event at the Lone Star Invitational on Mar. 21-22, the sophomore will return to the BGSU lineup this week where he has posted a stroke average of 75.76 overall on the year. Michalak, who recorded an eighth-place finish with a 54-hole score of 213, even par, at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate in October, placed in a tie for 46th overall at the 2015 rain-shortened Greenbrier event with a 36-hole score of 150, +10, last spring.
Rounding out the lineup for the Falcons is Walker at the No. 5 spot. The first-year Falcon has played in five events thus far in his young intercollegiate career and has recorded a stroke average of 78.57 over his 14 rounds of play. Last time out, Walker carded a 54-hole score of 245, +29, to place in a tie for 93rd overall at the Lone Star Invitational.
