June 25, 2016 | Men's Cross Country
Clovis, Calif. – Bowling Green State University sophomore Tyler Phillips placed 19th in the 10,000 at the USA Track and Field Junior Outdoor Championships Friday night. Phillips posted a time of 32:54.66 at the meet.
Iowa State's Thomas Pollard won the championship with a time of 30:46.04. UCLA's Colin Burke was second and Illinois' Zachary Dale finished third. Phillips finished ahead of a pair of runners from Marist to earn a top-20 result.
"Tyler represented BGSU on the biggest stage for U-20 athletes in the country," BGSU men's cross country coach Chuck Wentz said. "To be able to have a top 20 nationally ranked runner at BGSU is something I am proud of."
Phillips qualified for the USATF juniors by reaching a qualifying standard at the All-Ohio Championships in the spring with a time of 31:28. That came after Phillips missed most of the cross country season due to injury. All competitors at the junior championships must be 19 years of age or younger.
