Combs, Gregory, Hinkle, Raker, Schrock & Shook all earn the conference honor
Six members of the Bowling Green State University softball team have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, announced by the league office on Friday afternoon (June 3). Senior Marisa Shook, juniors Briana Combs and Haley Schrock, redshirt sophomore Chelsea Raker and true sophs Kayla Gregory and Katee Hinkle all were named to the team.
Combs, a native of Northville, Mich. (Ladywood), pitched 23 games, starting 13, in 2016. She had four complete games on the year, and finished with a 2-10 record and an earned-run average of 4.66. Combs threw a total of 67 2/3 innings on the season and had 38 strikeouts. She batted 1.000, with a base hit in her lone plate appearance. She was one of three finalists for BGSU's Female Junior Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year award at The Ziggys, BGSU's Athletics Honors Night, in late April.
In the classroom, Combs maintains a perfect 4.000 grade-point average through the Spring 2016 semester, as a sport management major.

She started 30 starts at second base and two at the designated-player spot, and hit .270, with 27 hits in an even 100 at-bats. After playing sparingly over the season's first month, Gregory started each of the final 32 contests of the season, including all 23 MAC games. She had an on-base percentage of .318 and a slugging pct. of .330, scoring 10 runs and coming up with five extra-base hits on the year. Hinkle, a native of Taylor, Mo. (Palmyra), played in 50 of BGSU's 54 games on the year, starting all but one of those contests. She made 29 starts at shortstop and 20 at second base. She hit .218 on the year, scoring 19 runs and driving in 13, and ranked fourth on the Falcons with an on-base percentage of .353. Her four extra-base hits included the first two homers of her collegiate career. She was third on the team in runs scored, walked 20 times to place third on the team on that list as well. Hinkle led the Brown and Orange with 10 sacrifice bunts, and had an eight-game hitting streak, tied for the longest on the team in 2016. That was part of a stretch in which she reached base in a BG-best 12 consecutive games. Hinkle was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National College Athlete Honor Society, in February.
In the classroom, Hinkle has a cumulative GPA of 3.857 as a health science major. Like Combs and Gregory, she had a perfect 4.000 GPA in the Spring 2016 semester.

She led the Falcons in at-bats (161), tied for the team lead in walks (21) and was second on the club in homers (five), extra-base hits (14), RBI (23) and total bases (71). Raker was named both the MAC Player of the Week and the league's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week on March 9 after hitting .750 at Towson University's Tiger Clash the previous weekend. That tourney included a game in which she went 4-for-4 with four extra-base hits, and was part of a stretch in which she reached base in an incredible 11 consecutive plate appearances. Raker started all 23 MAC games, and had a stellar .993 fielding percentage in the league, with just one error in 137 total chances. Like Hinkle, Raker was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma in February.
Raker, who is majoring in public health at BGSU, has a cumulative GPA of 3.463.
Schrock, a native of Goshen, Ind. (Northridge), was one of just two Falcons to start all 54 games in 2016, and she was the lone player on the team to make starts at four different positions. Schrock led the team with a .316 batting average, and her BG-high 50 hits included nine doubles, a team-leading two triples and two homers. She had an on-base percentage of .384 and a slugging pct. of .437, ranking second on the team in the former and third in the latter. Schrock had a .979 fielding pct., with just five errors in 236 total chances. She hit .288 in MAC play, with a .382 OBP and a .390 slugging pct. Schrock had 12 multiple-hit games to tie for the team lead, and she also had four multi-RBI contests. She started 33 games at third base, 16 at first base, four at second base and one as the designated player. She was named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on April 13, after batting .444 the previous week, and she was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma in February.
In the classroom, Schrock maintains a 3.971 cumulative GPA as an accounting major. Like several of BGSU's other Academic All-MAC Team honorees, she had a perfect 4.000 GPA in the Spring 2016 semester.
Shook, a native of Maumee, Ohio (Anthony Wayne), was named the Falcons' Offensive Player of the Year and was one of three finalists for BGSU's Female Senior Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year award at The Ziggys. She was one of just two Falcons to start every game, getting the start in left field in all 54 contests, and she batted in the cleanup spot in 47 of those games. Shook hit .301 and led the Falcons in a plethora of categories, including runs (32), RBI (32), doubles (12), homers (nine), extra-base hits (21), total bases (86), on-base pct. (.391) and slugging pct. (.551). Her doubles total was the highest by a Falcon in four years, and she ranked 10th in the MAC in both two-base hits and runs scored. Shook hit .297 in league play, leading the Brown and Orange with a .453 slugging pct. in league games. She hit .455 in each of the first two weekends of the season, and earned MAC Player-of-the-Week honors after the second such weekend. Shook had 11 multiple-hit games, and also had 11 multiple-RBI games, more than double the total of any of her teammates. Shook homered in the final at-bat of her collegiate career, driving a ball over the center-field fence at Meserve Field.
In the classroom, Shook had a 3.834 cumulative GPA as a dietetics major. She is one of the many Falcon softball student-athletes -- ten, to be exact -- who had a perfect 4.000 GPA in the Spring 2016 semester.
Both Schrock and Shook earn Academic All-MAC Team honors for the second consecutive year. The other four student-athletes all were named to the team in their first year of eligibility. Combs, Gregory and Hinkle all were in their first season with the Falcons in 2015 (freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for consideration), while Raker missed the entire '15 season due to injury.
The Academic All-MAC Team honored is bestowed upon a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, said student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for teh award.
From the list of Academic All-MAC Team members, the conference's faculty athletic representatives will select the 'best of the best' to be honored with the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2015-16 academic year. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport is equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever is greater. The list of Distinguished Scholar Athletes is expected to be announced sometime in the next few weeks.
