Falcons Picked To Win MAC East Division Again
July 28, 2016 | Football
Cleveland, Ohio – For the third consecutive season, the Bowling Green State University football team has been picked to win the Mid-American Conference East Division by members of the league's media in the preseason poll. The Falcons have won three straight Division crowns, posting 17 consecutive wins over MAC East Division foes dating back to the 2012 season.
While the Falcons narrowly edged out Ohio as the MAC East Division favorites, Bowling Green has held a decided advantage over the Bobcats in recent years, outscoring them 62-24 a year ago and 142-37 in the past three meetings. BGSU earned 12 first-place votes and 136 total points, while Ohio had 10 first-place votes and 134 total points. Akron totaled the other four first-place votes and 107 points to be picked third as Buffalo was fourth with 75 points. Miami (52 points) and Kent State (42 points) round out the East Division.
In five games against the East a year ago, Bowling Green outscored its divisional opponents 259-94. The Falcons won four of the five contests by at least 24 points. During the team's 17-game win streak over the East, BGSU has won by an average score of 39.4-16.1.
In the West Division, Western Michigan picked up 19 of the 26 first place votes and 144 points as the runaway leader. Toledo (two first-place votes and 113 points) and Northern Illinois (three first-place votes and 112 points) were virtually deadlocked behind the Broncos. Central Michigan also garnered two first-place votes and 98 points. Ball State (44 points) and Eastern Michigan (35 points) rounded out the division.
Nineteen of the 26 voters picked Western Michigan to win the MAC Championship game. Bowling Green, winners of the 2013 and 2015 MAC Championship, received just one vote to repeat. The Falcons, though, have often proved the prognosticators wrong as they did not get a single vote to win the MAC Championship in 2015 and only two in 2013. They led all teams in 2014 with 11 votes to win the MAC Championship.
Bowling Green opens the 2016 season Sept. 3 at Ohio State at noon on Big Ten Network. The Falcons' home opener will be played Sept. 10 against North Dakota at 3:30 pm before hosting Middle Tennessee State Sept. 17 at noon. Homecoming will be Oct. 1 at 3 pm for the MAC opener against Eastern Michigan and the University will celebrate 50 years of Doyt Perry Stadium for that contest.
