Bowling Green Hosts Valparaiso Tuesday Evening

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team hosts Valparaiso on Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. inside of the Stroh Center. The Falcons, who will head to the UIC Invitational for three matches over the weekend, wrap up non-conference play this week.
Bowling Green is coming off a perfect 3-0 weekend at the EIU Panther Classic. The Falcons earned wins over Louisiana Tech, Eastern Illinois and Drake to improve to 6-3 on the season. The Falcons have now won five of its last six matches, with its only loss in that stretch coming to Marshall on Sept. 7.
After picking up five-set victories over Louisiana Tech and Eastern Illinois to begin the weekend, BGSU defeated Drake by a score of 3-1 to wrap up the invitational. Drake entered the match with an 8-2 record.
Immediately following the match, Jelena Sunjic was named MVP of the EIU Panther Classic. Madeline Garda and Alyssa Maloney were named to the All-Tournament team.
Sunjic recorded double-digit kills in all four matches, posted at least 16 kills three times, and hit at least .400 three times, as well. For the week, Sunjic hit a staggering .402 with a total of 61 kills (3.59 kills/set), while also registering 72.0 points. The native of Metkovic, Croatia hit .652 (16-1-23) at Eastern Illinois, .486 (18-1-35) vs. Louisiana Tech, .400 (10-2-20) versus Marshall, and .224 (17-6-49) against Drake.
For the week, Garda posted an astonishing 118 digs, which is good enough for a 6.94 digs/set average. She averaged 29.5 digs/match, and also racked up 11 assists and four aces on the week. In the final three matches of the week, Garda posted at least 33 digs. The senior notched 37 digs versus Louisiana Tech, and then followed that up the next day with a 33-dig effort at Eastern Illinois, and concluded the invitational with a career-best 40 digs versus Drake.
Maloney picked up a total of 43 kills, and hit .315 for the invitational. Maloney has now notched at least 12 kills over the last five matches, and has registered double-digit kills in seven of BGSU's nine matches in 2016.
Valparaiso enters Tuesday's match with an overall record of 6-4. The Crusaders have yet to post a losing record at the three tournaments that they have competed at. Valparaiso went 2-1 at both the Black Knights Invitational and Trojan Invitational the first two weekend of the season, before going 2-2 at its own Popcorn Classic this past weekend.
The Crusaders are hitting .190 as a team, averaging 11.44 kills/set, 10.36 assists/set and 17.18 digs/set. Valparaiso went 27-8 last season, which includes an 11-5 mark in Horizon League play.
The Falcons will finish off non-conference play at the UIC Invitational over Sept. 16-17. BGSU will battle UMass-Lowell on Sept. 16 at 4:30 p.m. On Sept. 17, Bowling Green will play SIUE at 1:30 p.m. and hosts Illinois-Chicago at 6 p.m.
