FORT WAYNE, Ind. – After a scoreless first half, the Bowling Green women's soccer program rebounded with a dominate 3-0 victory over Fort Wayne Friday evening to improve to a 5-3 record on the season.
The Falcons came out strong in the second half by tallying 18 shots, leading to a total of 27 on the night. Junior Skylar Fleak marked a season-high of six shots for the Falcons, and ultimately notched the game winner in the 48th minute.
"I'm proud of our team for putting together back-to-back, hard fought road wins," Bowling Green women's soccer head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. "We are playing with a lot of confidence right now and a willingness to work for each other that we've never seen before."
When in was still early in the second half, Fleak scored her fourth goal of the season by knocking in a header in the box. It is the third match in a row in which the Sunbury, Ohio native has gotten on the board for the Falcons.
Just 10 minutes later, redshirt sophomore Jennifer Reyes found the net for the first time this season as she nabbed a cross pass from Fleak and junior Madison Schupbach, and tucked the ball into the lower left corner of the net. The goal came off of one of Reyes' three shots on the night.
As the Falcons were on a roll, freshman Maureen Kennedy took advantage of a penalty kick opportunity in the 67th minute to extend Bowling Green's lead to 3-0 with just over 23 minutes remaining. The goal was the Cypress, Calif. native's second of the season, in addition to being credited with the assist on Fleak's match-winner earlier in the evening.
In goal for Bowling Green was freshman Kathleen Duwve, who made her second start in a row and tallied five saves on the night. The Sylvania, Ohio native earned her first career shutout by stopping 12 attempted shots by the Mastodons over the course of the 90 minute matchup.
Other standouts for the Falcons included sophomore Erica Hubert, who marked five shots, including three shots on goal, while freshman Sam Howshar got in on the action by attempting three shots against the Mastodons.
Overall, the Falcons held the advantage in shots (27-12), shots on goal (15-5) and corner kick opportunities (6-4). Bowling Green also held to just five fouls in comparison to Fort Wayne's nine committed on the night.
"The last seven weeks we have wrestled with a lot of adversity and made choices to grow from every experience that has come our way," Coach Basalyga added. "With that in mind, I think we're in a great place heading into Mid-American Conference play next week."
Up next, the Bowling Green women's soccer program will open Mid-American Conference play by welcoming Ohio to Cochrane Field. The Friday, Sept. 23 match is set for a 7 p.m. start and will be televised on ESPN3.
