CHICAGO – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team finished off a perfect 3-0 weekend at the UIC Invitational by sweeping both Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the University of Illinois at Chicago on Saturday (Sept. 17). The Falcons defeated SIUE, 25-14; 25-19; 25-23. Bowling Green then downed UIC in straight sets by a score of 25-20; 25-17; 25-20.
"We are excited and happy about the strong finish to our preseason," said head coach Danijela Tomic. "Moreover, we improved our consistency, which was our goal, and three sweeps this weekend were a result of that improvement. All of our players have contributed to our successes so far, and that's something that is making this team special. We plan to carry this momentum into MAC play, which starts next week, while continuing to improve as a team and individually."
The Falcons have now won seven-straight matches to improve to 10-3 on the season. BGSU went 4-0 on the week. The Falcons swept Valparaiso on Sept. 13, and began the UIC Invitational with another sweep against UMass-Lowell on Sept. 16.
Since sets were played up to 25 points, which began in 2001, the Falcons have only won four-straight matches, with all four matches being sweeps, two other times (2006, 2011).
Dating back to its four-set victory over Drake on Sept. 10, the Orange and Brown have won 13-consecutive sets. The Falcons, who have already surpassed last season's win total by two matches, last won seven-straight matches in 2011.
Following the evening match against UIC, Madeline Garda was named the MVP of the invitational. Katie Scholten was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Garda currently leads all of Division I volleyball in digs/set at 6.50. Heading into the weekend, she was the only player in the country that was even above 6.00 digs/set. After notching 24 digs (8.00 digs/set) against Valparaiso on Sept. 13, Garda posted 22 digs (7.33 digs/set) versus UMass-Lowell, 27 digs (9.00 digs/set) against SIUE, and 19 digs (6.33 digs/set) in the final match of the week at UIC.
Kallie Seimet, who had 11 digs in the SIUE match, followed things up in the night cap with an 18-dig effort against UIC.
Scholten had 37 assists (12.3 assists/set) in both matches today, and registered 22 assists (7.33 assists/set) in the UMass-Lowell match. She also registered three kills apiece in the first two matches of the weekend, and two kills against UIC. Scholten also recorded a double-double in the SIUE match, as she picked up 10 digs to go along with her 37 assists.
Jelena Sunjic had a big match in the win over the Illinois-Chicago. She picked up a match-high 17 kills, and hit .500 (17-2-30). Alyssa Maloney, who had nine kills and hit .500 (9-1-16) in the match versus SIUE, had 10 kills against UIC. Sunjic also delivered in the first match of the day against SIUE, as she posted 10 kills.
Isabel Kovacic had a nice day offensively, as well. The sophomore had nine kills in the first match, and then tallied 10 more against UIC. She hit .200 and .318, respectively.
Jessi Holly, who had 13 kills in yesterday's victory over UMass-Lowell, registered seven kills apiece in both matches.
Bowling Green will open up conference play against Miami University on Sept. 22 inside of the Stroh Center. The game will serve as BGSU's annual Dollar Day. Tickets for the match are just $1, as are hot dogs and other select concession stand items.Â
