Memphis, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University football team concluded its non-conference schedule with a loss to the University of Memphis on Saturday (Sept. 24) evening at the Liberty Bowl. The Falcons are now 1-3 on the campaign following the 77-3 defeat.
Memphis got off to a quick start, as the Tigers covered 66 yards on seven plays for an opening-drive touchdown. The Falcons countered, however, with a field goal to pull within four points at 7-3.
James Knapke, who finished the game 8-of-15 for 82 yards, connected with Marquis Zimmerman for a 40-yard completion. The reception for Zimmerman was a career long. The play helped set up a 30-yard Jake Suder field goal.
The Falcons then forced a stop on the Tigers' ensuing drive, but on Bowling Green's next possession, a Knapke pass tipped off a receiver's hands on the first play of the drive, and went the other way for a 28-yard interception return to the end zone.
The Orange and Brown charged down to the Memphis 46 following the interception, but the Tigers forced a stop and quickly went up by a score of 21-3 with a touchdown drive.
Another tipped ball turned interception set up a fourth Tiger touchdown, and Memphis went on to seize control of the game from there, and moved to 3-0 on the season with the victory.
James Morgan played in relief of Knapke, and played the majority of the game. Morgan completed 17-of-34 passes for 126 yards. Zimmerman had a career day for the Orange and Brown, as he hauled in four passes for 75 yards.
Scott Miller caught seven passes for 40 yards, while Ronnie Moore totaled 37 yards on six catches. Deric Phouthavong caught two passes for 27 yards.
On the ground, Fred Coppet rushed for 47 yards on 12 carries. Josh Cleveland touched the ball nine times for 25 yards, while Donovan Wilson picked up 16 yards on three carries.
Joe Davidson had another great game punting the ball. Five of his eight punts were downed inside of the 20. He had two punts travel over fifty yards, which included a 68-yard bomb. Davidson had another punt that was downed at the Memphis one-yard line.
Defensively, Trent Greene led the way with eight tackles. Robert Jackson notched six, Jerry McBride registered five, while Nico Lautanen, Nate Locke and David Konowalski added four tackles apiece.
Konowalski recorded a sack. Lautanen notched his first two tackles for loss, and Brian Sanders totaled his first tackle for loss of his career, as well. Dorian Hendrix's tackle for loss was also the first in his Falcon career.
The Falcons will open conference play on Oct. 1 at Doyt. L Perry Stadium in a Homecoming matchup versus Eastern Michigan. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. The game will also serve as the 50th Anniversary celebration of Doyt L. Perry Stadium.
