Wright State Breaks BG Stranglehold on I-75 Cup
October 10, 2017 | Men's Soccer
Raiders top Falcons for the first time since 2011
For the first time in six years, the I-75 Cup will reside in Dayton.
Â
Host Wright State University broke on top early, and the Raiders went on to a 2-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Tuesday night (Oct. 10). The non-conference match was held at WSU's Alumni Stadium.
Â
AJ Paterson scored in the sixth minute of the match for the hosts, who improve to 8-4-1 on the year. Paterson's goal came at the 5:29 mark, three and a half minutes after a BGSU goal was waved off due to an offside call.
Â
Luke Treadway added the clinching goal for the hosts with just 6:03 left in the second half.
Â
The result, as mentioned, gives the Raiders possession of the I-75 Cup, a traveling trophy that goes to the winner of the BGSU-WSU match each year.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT
- Wright State's win snapped a five-match series winning streak for BGSU. The Falcons last lost to the Raiders in November of 2011. BGSU is now 6-2-0 against the Raiders since BGSU coach Eric Nichols and his counterpart, WSU's Bryan Davis, came up with the idea for the cup prior to the 2010 season.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
- 2' – Off of a corner kick, senior Brad Macomber played a ball into the box. Sophomore Chris Brennan's short cross from the left side was headed in by junior Moe Mustafa from close range, but the assistant referee's flag was up, indicating an offside call against the Falcons.
- 6' – WSU got on the scoreboard, as Paterson got his head on a long ball from midfield. Paterson's header went into the upper right-hand corner of the goal. Sam DeRoy picked up the assist for the Raiders.
- 11' – After a foul on WSU near the end line, just outside the box on the left side, junior Tate Robertson's cross was blocked out of the box. Fellow junior Peter Pugliese tracked the ball down, and played a short pass to Macomber. Macomber popped the ball back into the box, but it was headed out for a BG throw-in.
- 12' – Off of that Brennan throw, senior Alexis Souahy got his head on the ball, flicking it on to freshman Zach Buescher. Buescher in turn found sophomore Charlie Maciejewski, who hit the ball out of the air, but his one-time effort landed on top of the net.
- 17' – Buescher took Macomber's forward pass and laid the ball into the path of Brennan. Brennan hit a low shot from just outside the 18, but it was grabbed by WSU goalkeeper Alex Williams near the left post.
- 20' – Robertson's free kick from just over midfield sailed on goal, where Williams plucked it out of the air.
- 24' – A ball was deflected out to WSU's Blake Pittser, who hit a hard shot that sailed wide left.
- 37' – Robertson's pass found Chris Sullivan on the right side of the pitch. The freshman faked a pass down the line, cut across the field and hit a low shot from just outside of the box. But, Williams was able to make the stop.
- 38' – Off of a left-side cross, the ball was deflected, but found WSU's Jalim Bayo on the far side of the box. He hit a hard shot in stride, but it was blocked out for a corner kick.
- 42' – Robertson's free kick was headed by Mustafa on the left side of the box, and the ball went toward a cluster of players that included Buescher and senior Keaton Reynolds. One of the Falcons made contact with the ball, but the shot went wide.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
- 54' – Off of a Brennan throw-in, Robertson knocked the ball back to the sophomore, who hit a crossing ball from the left side. The cross found Mustafa on the six-yard line near the far post, but his effort was corralled by Williams.
- 58' – Robertson took a Maciejewski pass and hit a bullet of a shot from the left side of the box. Williams somehow parried the shot near the left post, and the Falcons were called for a foul as the teams vied for the rebound.
- 62' – WSU answered with a blast from top of box at the other end of the field. Sophomore Anthony Mwembia blocked that effort off the foot of Paterson, and BG cleared the ball out of danger.
- 63' – Brennan hit a scorcher, seemingly out of nowhere, but his turnaround shot was somehow tipped over the bar by Williams, and the Raiders successfully dealt with the ensuing corner kick.
- 67' – Mwembia took a free kick from near the midfield stripe. His long ball was flicked on by Reynolds, and Souahy hit a shot from the top of the box, but it rolled directly to Williams.
- 70' – Pugliese played the ball to Reynolds on the left side, and the senior's low cross was redirected by junior Dominic Grida, but the shot was wide left.
- 79' – The Raiders looked to double the lead, but Mwembia made the save on Treadway after a serve from the left side.
- 84' – Five minutes later, though, the hosts indeed did double that advantage. Alec Philippe won the ball on the right side, got past a BG defender and played a low cross to a wide-open Treadway. Mwembia had no chance to make the save, and the Raiders had a two-goal advantage.
- 87' – BG had several chances over the last few minutes, but a Falcon player slipped as he was preparing to serve the ball from the left side, and after BG got the ball back, a Sullivan header was stopped by the WSU 'keeper.
STATISTICS
- BGSU held a 12-10 advantage in total shot attempts, and the Falcons had six shots on goal to the Raiders' five.
- Williams made six saves to earn the shutout, while Mwembia had three stops at the other end of the field.
- The two scorers, Paterson and Treadway, each had three total shots to lead all players. Those two players, along with Brennan and Robertson, each had two shots on goal on the night.
- Macomber, Mustafa, Mwembia, Peter Pugliese, Robertson, Souahy and sophomore Tom Wrobel each played all 90 minutes for the Falcons. Brennan was on the pitch for 82 minutes and Buescher 70.
