Tavpash Soars in First Day of ITA Regionals

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – At the conclusion of the first day of the ITA Midwest Regionals, the Falcons earned a total of five wins, while sophomore Marharita-Sophia Tavpash will continue competition in the Top-16 of the Singles Qualifying Bracket.

Day One Highlights
- Four of the six Falcons participating earned wins in the first round to compete in the top-32 of the singles bracket.
- With a pair of victories in the first day of action, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash will compete in the Top-16 against Veronika Golanova of Illinois State. Tavpash's victories came in a strong 6-1, 6-1 win over Srista Slaria (EIU), followed by a persistent 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 win over Darya Maltseva (Oakland). Tavpash's next opponent Golanova advanced with a narrow 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 win over Depaul, before downing Detroit 6-2, 6-2.
- Freshman Marta Bettinelli earned a victory over seeded Grace Tapak (Illinois) in the opening round of the singles qualifier, then faced off against Mid-American Conference rival Colleen O'Brien in the Top-32, although fell by scores of 6-3, 6-1. No stranger to O'Brien, Bettinelli faced O'Brien for the doubles title at Buffalo Invitational this fall, and won by a score of 7-6 (4) with partner Paula Comella.
- Junior Polina Radeva opened the ITA Regionals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Iesha Shepherd (Chicago State) to move on to the Top-32. Although a hard-fought match with an opening set win, Radeva fell by narrow scores of 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 to seeded Alina Kuzmenkova (Depaul).
- With a final of 6-4, 6-3, sophomore Ayumi Sasaki also earned a win on the day when she downed Barbare Eristavi (WMU) in a MAC rivalry.
- Falcons competing in their first ITA Midwest Regionals was also Sidney Reineke and Vanesa Pardo.
Still to Come
- The Falcons will continue the ITA Midwest Regionals tomorrow, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash competes in the Top-16 of the Singles Qualifying Draw beginning at 9 a.m., in which the Top-8 advance to the main draw, followed by doubles action that begins at 2 p.m.
- Participating in the Doubles Main Draw will be Tavpash / Pardo vs. Belaya / Hilton (Illinois), Radeva / Sasaki vs. Mayerova / Martinovska (EMU), and Comella / Bettinelli vs. Kusmenkova / Jovicic (Depaul).
- Junior Paula Comella will begin singles competition on Saturday, Oct. 14 in the Singles Main Draw.
