TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Falcons' tough luck against their arch-rivals continued on Thursday afternoon when Toledo defeated the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team 2-1. The loss closed out the 2017 regular season for BGSU and was the team's tenth consecutive loss in the series. The Falcons enter the 2017 Mid-American Conference Tournament as the #4 seed with a conference record of 6-4-1 and an overall mark of 11-6-1. This will be Bowling Green's first tournament appearance since the 2008 season.
The Falcons deployed their normal aggressive offense early in the match and earned several opportunities to get the ball towards Toledo's net. The action paid off in the 12th minute, when Madison Schupbach dribbled the ball to the top of the box and passed left to an open Erica Hubert. Hubert lifted a shot from ten yards out and beat Toledo goalkeeper Madison Perrin high for a 1-0 lead. The goal was the eighth for Hubert and tied her personal record for goals in one season. Schupbach moved into a tie for the team lead with her seventh assist.
However, Toledo flipped the field midway through the first half and was the primary attacker until halftime. The Falcons survived multiple Rocket shots, but a scramble in front of the BGSU net in the final minute allowed Anita Mancini to even the game with just one second left on the clock. In the second half, Bowling Green produced just three shots and no shots on goal. Toledo's Sophie Pohl scored the game-winner with 4:51 remaining for the final 2-1 margin.
COACH SAYS...
BGSU head coach Matt Fannon said, "We did not match Toledo's intensity today and did not have the killer instinct we needed to win the game. In the big moments, we were not at our best."
NOTE OF THE DAY: WINNING WAYS
Bowling Green completed the 2017 regular season with 11 total wins and six conference wins. The 11 total regular season wins are tied for the second-most in BGSU history, with the 2002 and 2008 teams. Only the 2005 team, which won 13 regular season games en route to a MAC championship, ever won more. The team's .639 winning percentage is currently second-best in school history behind the 2005 team. This is the sixth time the Falcons have won six or more conference games; in four of the previous five times, BGSU won at least one tournament game.
