BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team plays their first Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Tournament match in nine years on Sunday when they host the Buffalo Bulls in the quarterfinal round. The contest begins at 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium. Entrance to the match is free. The Falcons ended the 2017 regular season with an 11-6-1 overall record and a 6-4-1 mark in the MAC. That earned them the fourth seed in the tournament. Buffalo (7-8-3, 5-4-2 MAC) is seeded fifth.
LAST TIME OUT
Bowling Green dropped a 2-1 decision to the Toledo Rockets on Thursday (Oct. 26) in the final regular season match for both teams. Erica Hubert buried a Madison Schupbach pass into the back of the net in the 12th minute for a 1-0 lead, but Toledo scored with one second left in the first half and again with 4:51 remaining in the game to claim the win.Â
SCOUTING BUFFALO
After a disappointing 2-4-1 run in non-conference play, the Bulls came out strong when MAC opponents became involved. Buffalo started their conference schedule 3-1-1, including wins over tournament teams Western Michigan (2-0) and Ohio (2-1). The Bulls dropped to .500 with back-to-back losses. However, they ended that streak with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Toledo. They garnered four more important points with a win over Miami and a draw at Akron to complete the regular season 7-8-3.
Senior Julia Benati has four goals in her last seven games to take over the team lead with seven scores. Junior Carissima Cutrona adds six; the two combined have more than half of Buffalo's 25 goals. Kara Daly leads Buffalo with five assists, while Cutrona (4) and Benati (3) are also high on the team leaderboard. Laura Dougall has started all 18 games in goal and recently became the MAC's all-time leader in minutes played as a goalkeeper. Dougall has allowed 22 goals in 116 chances for a save percentage of .810 and a goals allowed average of 1.17. She has earned six shutouts in her 18 starts.
Buffalo head coach Shawn Burke is in his fourth season with the Bulls and owns a 41-26-14 record. His teams have made the MAC Tournament in each of his four seasons. His 2014 team won the MAC regular season and tournament championships. Overall, Burke's teams are 4-2 in MAC Tournament games.
ONE FOR THE AGES
BGSU's regular season victory over Buffalo was an exciting affair that resulted in one of the great comebacks in Falcon history. Although Bowling Green played even with Buffalo over the first 45 minutes, Julia Benati's goal in the 34th minute allowed the Bulls to carry a 1-0 lead into hafltime. Buffalo doubled the margin a third of the way through the second half on a Gianna Yurchak goal. After that, Skylar Fleak took over. She scored three minutes after Buffalo's second goal to get BGSU back to within 2-1, then posted the equalizer in the 76th minute. She capped the comeback with a header off a corner kick with 7:22 remaining for a 3-2 win. The hat trick took just 20:16 of game time and was Fleak's second of the season. The two-goal comeback was BGSU's first in 14 years.Â
CHELSEE IN CHARGE
Chelsee Washington played an enormous role in Bowling Green's 3-1 win against MAC Eastern Division champion Kent State. In the 37th minute, Washington headed in a diagonal pass from Alexis Fricke to put the Falcons ahead 1-0. It was the first goal scored against KSU in 541:08. After the Golden Flashes evened the match in the second half, Washington drilled in a shot from 15 yards out off a pass from Marissa Swindell. The goal served as the eventual game-winner, which was the first of her career. She is the first player to score twice against KSU in 2017, and her two goals equal the total scored against KSU in their first nine MAC games. Washington's two goals were her only two shots of the game in 39 minutes as a primary reserve..
FANTASTIC FLEAKÂ
Senior forward Skylar Fleak is having one of the best offensive seasons in BGSU history. Against Buffalo, she posted her second hat trick of 2017 with three goals in 20:16, the fourth-fastest hat trick by a Falcon, as BGSU came back from 2-0 down to beat Buffalo. Her first hat trick was a four-goal game at Oakland. She added an assist in a 2-0 win over Akron for a seven-point weekend. She now has 11 goals and 27 points (each third-most in BGSU history) and a personal-best five assists. She is second in the MAC in points and goals, and she ranks in the top 25 nationally for both. In her career, Fleak has 27 goals (third most at BGSU) and 64 points (fourth most at BGSU). Her efforts have earned three MAC Offensive Player of the Week awards in 2017.
SENSATIONAL SCHUPBACH
BGSU scored five times across two wins against Buffalo and Akron, and senior Madison Schupbach played a role in four of them. Against Buffalo, she posted a pair of assists, the last of which came via a corner kick that Skylar Fleak headed home for the game-winner in a two-goal comeback. In the 2-0 win over Akron, Schupbach scored her first career game-winning goal and assisted on the second. Over the last ten days, she added BGSU's only goal in a 1-1 draw at Ohio and assisted on BGSU's goal against Toledo. Schupbach's seven assists in 2017 have more than doubled her career total, and she has a personal-best four goals and 15 points.
