BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Bowling Green tennis program opened the three-day Buffalo Invitational on Friday with a pair of wins, including a singles victory by sophomore Ayumi Sasaki and a doubles win by the duo of junior Paula Comella and freshman Marta Bettinelli. While a total of six Falcons saw action today, five are still to begin their respective singles competition over the two remaining days of competition.

Day One Highlights

Sophomore Ayumi Sasaki continued with the momentum of her strong fall season by earning an opening match win over Maranda Sears of Duquesne by scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Junior Paula Comella teamed up with freshman Marta Bettinelli to earn a first round victory over the pairing of Hegab / Mitchell of Syracuse by a score of 6-3.
Thus far in the season, Comella and Bettinelli have only lost a single dual match, and it was to teammates Ayumi Sasaki and Polina Radeva.
Bettinelli also opened her singles competition, but fell by scores of 6-4, 6-2 to Ally Miller of Syracuse.
In doubles competition, Marharita-Sophia Tavpash and Vanesa Pardo competed in the Doubles Mild Draw, but fell to Kona / Miller of Duquesne by a narrow score of 7-5.
In the Doubles HOT Draw, Ayumi Sasaki and Polina Radeva opened competition against Isaacs / Herman of Duquesne, but fell 6-1.

Upcoming Tournament Action to Keep an Eye On

Ayumi Sasaki will face Anna Savchenko (Buffalo) in the quarterfinals match of the Singles Blue Cheese Draw, after Savchenko advanced with a first round bye.
Paula Comella and Marta Bettinelli will compete against Weaver / Leyva (Siena) in the semifinals of the Doubles Medium Draw, and will face the winner of Toledo / Buffalo pairings if they advance.
Polina Radeva and Ayumi Sasaki will face Martinovska / Mayerova (Eastern Michigan) in the consolation semifinal of the Doubles Hot Draw.
Marharita-Sophia Tavpash and Vanesa Pardo will take on Barcelo / Sharma (Eastern Michigan) in the consolation semifinals of the Doubles Mild Draw.
