BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University tennis program continues the 2017 season this weekend, as it travels to Buffalo, N.Y. to compete in the Buffalo Invitational from Friday, Oct. 6 through Sunday, Oct. 8.
A Mid-American Conference foe and host school Buffalo will welcome a total of eight programs in competition, including the Falcons. Other participants will include Syracuse, Toledo, Duquesne, Siena, and Eastern Michigan, while all teams will compete in six singles flights as well as three doubles flights over the course of the three-day tournament.
Most recently, Bowling Green continued 2017 fall competition by traveling to Dayton, Ohio to participate in the WSU Invitational. The Falcons earned four flight titles on the weekend, including three in singles and one in doubles action. On the season, Bowling Green has earned a total of seven titles across two Invitationals.
Sophomore Ayumi Sasaki claimed the Flight Two Singles title, in addition to the Flight One Doubles title when she paired up with Polina Radeva. The duo squared off against teammates Paula Comella and Marta Bettinelli, each of whom earned individual titles in singles competition. Sasaki went undefeated in both singles and doubles competition, while freshman Marta Bettinelli's victory marked her first career title with the Bowling Green tennis program. Ultimately, the Falcons earned a total of 20 match wins in head-to-head play over the course of the weekend.
Head Coach Stephanie Dalmacio heads into her second season at the helm of the program after posting a 5-15 overall record and 1-7 mark in conference action in her first season as head coach for the Orange and Brown. Dalmacio's young team includes four returners in addition to three freshmen and one transfer student-athlete, with the addition of first-year assistant coach Jieke Stroobant of Belgium.
Host-school Buffalo first kicked off its 2017-18 season with the Harvard Invite after completing the 2016-17 campaign with a record of 14-9, while posting a 5-3 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Sixth-year head coach Kristen Maines and the Bulls return an experienced roster consisting of three sophomores, five juniors and two seniors.
The Buffalo Invitational is the third of four tournaments for the Falcons in the fall season and is followed by the ITA Regionals (Oct. 12-17). The Bowling Green tennis program will also host its third annual Pro-Am fundraiser on Dec. 2 to cap off the 2017 fall campaign.
