Joseph Davidson Named Semifinalist For Ray Guy Award
November 16, 2017 | Football
Augusta, Ga. – The Augusta Sports Council has announced that Bowling Green State University redshirt senior Joseph Davidson has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award, given annually to the top punter in the country. Davidson was also a semifinalist a year ago.
The top 10 semifinalists were chosen from a field of 78 nominated candidates and were evaluated on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Particular emphasis is placed on net punting average, number of punts downed or kicked out-of-bounds inside the 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average return yardage and percentage of punts not returned. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
Davidson carries a 3.95 grade point average with a double major in finance and mathematics. He was named first team Academic All-American a year ago and is completing his college career with another fantastic season on the field. He is averaging 44.2 yards per punt and has dropped 28 of his 57 punts inside the 20. He has 10 punts of 50 yards or more and has only had two touchbacks. In fact, he has had three punts downed at the one-yard line. His net punting average of 42.4 yards ranks eighth in the country.
The Ray Guy Award semifinalists include Corey Bojorguez (New Mexico), Drue Chrisman (Ohio State), Davidson, Michael Dickson (Texas), Corey Fatony (Missouri), Cody Grace (Arkansas State), Cameron Nizialek (Georgia), Yannis Routsas (UTSA), JK Scott (Alabama) and Mitch Wishnowsky (Utah).
Finalists for the Ray Guy Award will be announced Nov. 21 and the winner will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Atlanta, Ga. on Dec. 7.
