Jake Suder Named Nominee For Burlsworth Trophy

Fayetteville, Ark. – Bowling Green State University redshirt junior kicker Jake Suder has been named one of 63 nominees for the 2017 Burlsworth Trophy. Named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth, former University of Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman, the Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on.
Each nominee must have begun his first season of participation with an FBS football program without financial aid of any kind from his university's athletics department. Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield was the 2016 winner and led the Sooners to the college football playoff in 2016.
Suder earned a scholarship in fall camp by making a 53-yard field goal, a kick that went viral and appeared on various national media outlets and television shows such as Good Morning America, ESPN SportsCenter, USA Today, Yahoo! Sports and TMZ Sports.
Through nine games in 2017, Suder has certainly earned his scholarship, making 16-of-18 field goal attempts, including all 14 of his attempts inside of 40 yards. His field goal percentage of 88.9 percent is currently on pace to be the school record for a single-season. Most recently, he made all three of his attempts in a 44-16 win over Kent State.
Suder is one of six nominees from the Mid-American Conference and one of five kickers on the list. He was named the MAC East Division Special Teams Player of the Week earlier this year after connecting on all four of his field goal attempts against South Dakota.
