Falcons Cross Country Competes At NCAA Great Lakes Regional Meet
November 08, 2017 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Falcons cross country teams are back in action this week as they head to Terre Haute, Ind. to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals competition. The meet, hosted by Indiana State University at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, will take place Friday, November 10, 2017. The women are scheduled to race first, toeing the line for the 6K at 11:15 a.m., followed by the men's 10K event at 12:15 p.m.
Regional Rankings
For the first time all season the men's team is regionally ranked, coming in at number 14 in the Great Lakes Region after their historic run at the Mid-American Conference Championships Oct. 28. The ranking marks just the second time BGSU's men's team has been recognized as one of the top teams in the region since the USTFCCA rankings began in 2003. Last season they held the 12th place spot for one week. The women's team has also seen time in the regional rankings this season, peaking in 12th and, most recently, holding onto the 14th spot in Week 4.
Scouting The Competition
Bowling Green State University's men's and women's teams have both seen great success against fellow Great Lakes Region squads this season. To start the season, the men topped Great Lakes Region and MAC foe Toledo during the annual Mel Brodt Challenge. Both men's and women's teams traveled to East Lansing, Mich. and Notre Dame, Ind. to compete against hosts Michigan State and Notre Dame, also members of the region, as well as other regional opponents. Redshirt-junior Rachel Walny finished first overall at the Spartan Classic in which five regional teams competed. Seven members of the Great Lakes Region competed in the women's 5K Gold race at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Classic, with BGSU finishing first among regional opponents. The men finished second of four regional teams at the same meet. At the Pre-Nationals Invitational the men's team competed alongside seven regional opponents, finishing second of eight while the women were one of seven Great Lakes teams to compete in the Red Division race.
What They're Saying
"It's great to see the men's team ranked 14th in the region," head coach Lou Snelling said. "It's been a long time since they have been ranked. They've been riding this wave of success after the MAC Championships and we hope to continue that success at the regional meet."
"These two programs have been highly motivated all season," he added. "We, as a staff, are very proud of all they have accomplished."
Last Time Out
The 2017 MAC Championships saw the highest finish for a BGSU men's squad in 22 years. The team finished third overall behind junior Noah Schaub's third place finish, the highest individual finish for a Falcon on the men's team since 1995. His 8K time of 24:35 was the fastest ever Falcon finish at the MAC Championship meet, breaking Chris Koehler's record of 24:53 which was set in 1982. The women's team finished ninth overall behind career best performances by Rachel Durbin, Kelsie Mothersead and Claire Reynolds.
