Falcons Secure Third Place on Final Day of Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University completed a very successful three-day Zippy Invitational with 21 new personal records and 27 season-best times on Sunday (Dec. 3) at the Ocasek Natatorium. The result was a third-place finish among the field of nine teams. The Falcons earned 1,203 points and trailed only Akron and Buffalo. The team ended the meet 4.5 points ahead of Oakland University and defeated the Toledo Rockets by 165.5 points.
BGSU swimmers competed in six events on the final day of the meet. The day started with the preliminary round in four events during the morning session. Maria Galic and Elodie Schreiber both earned a spot in the championship final of the first event, the 200 backstroke. The pair turned that into seventh- and eight-place finishes with the two best event times of the season for a BGSU swimmer. Galic's 2:00.91 was sixth-best in school history. A total of five Falcons earned points in that event.
Freshman Jordan Andrusak, who already set a school record in the 200 IM and finished third in the 400 IM, completed her best meet of the season with a fourth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke. She also moved into ninth on BGSU's all-time list with a 2:18.08 in the final. Nikki Borgerding also won the consolation final of the 200 breaststroke when she touched in 2:19.36. In addition, freshman Sarah Hennings improved to eighth on BGSU's all-time list in the 200 butterfly by completing the consolation final in 2:03.81.
The Falcons ended the meet with a new school record, 40 personal records, two event victories, seven top-three finishes, 14 top-five finishes, top-five finishes in 14 of 20 total events, and two top-five finishes in three events.
Bowling Green will resume its season on Friday, Jan. 12 when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. for the Buffalo Diving Meet. The team will then travel to Athens, Ohio for a dual meet against the Ohio Bobcats on Jan. 27 before returning home for a two-day dual meet against Toledo on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 2-3.

SUNDAY STANDOUTS
- The relay team of Galic, Andrusak, Andrews, and Franks established a new team-best for the season in the 400 freestyle relay when they finished in 3:27.19
- The Falcons' second team (Washko, Loeck, Martin, and Criswell) posted a time (3:31.27) that also surpassed the team's previous season-best.
- Bowling Green swimmers set 27 season-best times and established 21 new personal records on Sunday.
- Natalie Criswell led the Falcons in the 1650 freestyle with a 17:01.75. She also set the team's season-best time at the 1000 yard mark (10:18.62).
- Jordan Andrusak, Sarah Fergus, and Gabrielle Loeck all earned points for BGSU in the 200 backstroke.
- Ashleigh Franks, Maddy Andrews, and Amanda Washko scored team points in the 100 freestyle. Franks led the group of 11 BGSUÂ swimmers in the event with a 0:52.04 in the final.
- Emily Verbrugge set a personal season-best time of 2:21.02 in the 200 breaststroke and qualified for the consolation final.
- Michaela Ruddiock tallied 11 points for the Falcons with an eighth-place finish (16th overall) in the consolation final of the 200 butterfly.Â
