Nell, Gustafson Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
February 13, 2017 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Chris Nell and track and field star Aliyah Gustafson.
Male Athlete of the Week
Chris Nell, a junior from Green Bay, Wisc., made 22 saves to shut out Mercyhurst in a 3-0 win Saturday evening during the celebration for the 50th anniversary of the Slater Family Ice Arena. Nell recorded a program-record ninth career shutout and kept the Lakers off the scoreboard until the Falcons could post two second-period goals. With Doc Emrick on the call, Nell closed out a magical evening at the Ice Arena.
Female Athlete of the Week
Aliyah Gustafson, a redshirt junior from Iowa City, Iowa, set new personal bests in both the shot put and the weight throw, breaking her own school record in the shot put. Gustafson threw 53-feet-1.5 (16.19m) in the shot put to place second in the invitational field at the GVSU Big Meet. That throw ranks third in the MAC this year and 22nd nationally. On top of that performance, she also set a new PR in the weight throw, winning the non-invitational flight at 59-5.5. That mark was good enough for a MAC auto bid and ranks sixth in the conference this year.
