Righter, Raker Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
February 20, 2017 | Baseball, General, Softball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Randy Righter and softball player Chelsea Raker.
Male Athlete of the Week
Randy Righter, a junior from West Bloomfield, Mich., went 5-for-8 with two runs and a walk in Bowling Green's three-game series at No. 20 Texas A&M over the weekend. His performance was especially encouraging, given that it was his first game action since suffering a season-ending injury last April. Righter went 3-for-3, scored a run, and reached base in all four of his plate appearances in the season opener on Feb. 17, as he was also hit by a pitch. In the series finale on Feb. 18, he went 2-for-3, drew a walk, and scored two runs. Righter is hitting .625 on the season following opening weekend.Â
Female Athlete of the Week
Chelsea Raker, a redshirt junior from Westerville, Ohio, hit .611 last weekend, going 11-for-18 in the Falcons' five games in the Charlotte First Pitch Classic, as BG advanced to the championship game of the four-team tourney. Raker had four multiple-hit games, including three three-hit games, in the five contests, with an on-base percentage of .650 and a slugging pct. of .833. She was 3-for-4 with a double in Friday's game vs. host Charlotte, then went a combined 5-for-7 in Saturday's two wins over St. Bonaventure. Raker drove in six runs in those two games. In the opener, she was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Then, in the nightcap, Raker was 3-for-3 and tied a school record with three doubles. She scored a run and had four RBI in the 5-4 victory. In her fourth plate appearance of the game, she was intentionally walked. Raker capped the weekend by going 3-for-4 with an RBI vs. Charlotte on Sunday. She struck out just once on the week and was perfect in 24 chances in the field.
