Despite Heavy Rain, Men's Golf Completes Opening Round of Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas – The Bowling Green men's golf program was rained out Friday afternoon while competing in the first day of the Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston. The Falcons were able to finish the first round with a team score of 285, -4, although four teams in the 19 team field were unable to complete the first 18 holes of competition.
The Falcons excelled on par 5 scoring by posting an average of 4.75, -5, the third best of the tournament thus far. The Bowling Green squad has combined for 59 pars and 15 birdies through the first round.
Redshirt sophomore Max Rispler tops the Falcons leaderboard and is tied for 11th overall in a field of 96 players after carding a first round score of 69, -3. Rispler topped not just the Bowling Green squad, but also the tournament field by averaging 3.60, -4 on par 4 scoring, in addition to earning five birdies through 18 holes.
With an opening round score of 71, -1, senior Jose Narro is currently tied for 18th overall. A native of Tampico, Mexico, Narro led the Falcons on par 3 scoring by averaging 2.75, -1.
Similarly, sophomore Pablo Heredia Iglesias also carded a first round score of 71, -1 by marking a notable 4.25, -3 average on par 5 scoring. The Sevilla, Spain native also marked five birdies over the course of the first round, and his 71 is the lowest score since for the sophomore since the opening round of the Mountaineer Intercollegiate in October.
With a score of 74, +2, senior Brett Rinker completed the first round by tallying a team-leading 14 pars in the action. Rounding out the Bowling Green lineup is sophomore Trey Walker who marked one birdie and 12 par scores on his way to carding a score of 77, +5.
Due to the wet weather the second round has been cancelled, and teams will resume play at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, with the final round starting immediately after the first round is completed.
This is the second consecutive season in which the Border Olympics has been shorted to 36-holes instead of the intended 54-hole competition due to rain. Host-school Houston currently tops the leaderboard with a team score of 278, -11.
