Righter, Walny Named Vito's Athletes Of The Week
April 17, 2017 | Baseball, General, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Vito's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Randy Righter and track and field runner Rachel Walny.
Male Athlete of the Week
Randy Righter, a junior from West Bloomfield, Mich., went 7-for-20 (.350) with four RBI, two runs and a home run this past week. He started off the week with a career-high five hits in a non-conference win over Kent State. Righter led BGSU to its first regular-season win over Kent State since 2014 by going 5-for-5 with a double, two runs, and a two-run home run. The product of Brother Rice High School notched a hit in two games over the weekend at Ball State, and chipped in with two RBI on Saturday (April 15).
Female Athlete of the Week
Rachel Walny, a redshirt sophomore from Clinton Township, Mich., broke a school record that had stood for 31 years with a time of 34:02.57 in the 10,000 at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays Thursday evening. Walny's time was 15 seconds faster than the previous school record, set by Sara Collas in 1986. Her time currently ranks second in the MAC and is a virtual lock to become the first BGSU student-athlete to compete in the 10,000 in NCAA postseason competition since 1993.
