Rachel Walny Named MAC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week
April 19, 2017 | Women's Track and Field
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore track and field distance runner Rachel Walny has been named the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, as voted on by the league's Faculty Athletics Representatives.
Walny, who carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average in exercise science, broke the school-record in the 10,000 Thursday evening, a mark which had stood for 31 years since Sara Collas established a time of 34:17.9 in 1986. Walny's time of 34:02.57 at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays was more than 15 seconds faster and is the second-fastest time in the MAC this year.
Her time makes her a virtual lock to become the first BGSU student-athlete to compete in the 10,000 in NCAA postseason competition since 1993. Walny was also named the MAC Track Athlete of the Week earlier this week for her effort, the second time she has earned that honor this year.
