Bowling Green, Ohio – Team Orange used a pair of long field goals and a Jarret Doege to Datrin Guyton touchdown pass to defeat Team White 13-7 Saturday in Bowling Green's annual Spring Game. The two teams generated four scoring drives, while the defenses limited the offenses in the game.
The BGSU football team was split into two teams and played four, 10-minute running clock quarters in a first look at the 2017 Falcons. The 2016 team concluded the season with three straight victories and BGSU recorded one of the best recruiting classes in the Mid-American Conference during the offseason in an effort to return to the MAC Championship game for the fourth time in five years.
In Saturday morning's Spring Game, Team Orange generated an early interception on a blitz of James Morgan. Jerry McBride III picked off the errant pass to help kick start the first scoring drive. On the ensuing possession, Doege found Scott Miller for a pair of completions and Jake Suder connected on a 46-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
Team White answered right back on the first play of the next drive as Josh Cleveland took a handoff 75 yards and outran the defense for an explosive touchdown and a 7-3 lead.
Just before the half, Team Orange got the lead back. The squad used a steady ground game to drive down the field and Doege hit Guyton in the corner of the end zone from 10 yards out for a 10-7 halftime edge.
The only scoring in the second half came on a 49-yard Suder field goal late in the fourth quarter. Team Orange started from their own 4-yard line after a 51-yard Joseph Davidson punt pinned them deep. Grant Loy drove the team down the field before stalling at the 32 and making way to Suder.
Incumbent starting quarterback James Morgan finished the game 4-for-5 passing for 31 yards. True freshman Doege was 5-for-7 for 130 yards and redshirt sophomore Grant Loy was 3-for-6 for 33 yards. Redshirt sophomore Elijah Cunningham went 3-for-7 for 28 yards.
At wide receiver, Miller made five catches for 140 yards and junior transfer Datrin Guyton had three catches for 23 yards. Teo Redding and Pete Norris each had two catches. On the ground, Cleveland finished with three carries for 88 yards and Donovan Wilson had eight rushes for 22 yards. Brian Jennings added eight carries for 23 yards and Terence Stephens had 13 yards on four rushing attempts.
Bowling Green will open the 2017 season Sept. 2 as the Falcons play at Michigan State in the first of two games against Big Ten opponents in non-conference play. The Falcons' home opener is Sept. 9 against South Dakota for Family Weekend.
