Augusta, Ga. – Bowling Green State University redshirt senior Joseph Davidson is one of 29 punters named to the 2017 Ray Guy Award preseason watch list, as announced by The Augusta Sports Council. The award honors the nation's top collegiate punter.
Â
Davidson is one of five 2016 semifinalists to earn a spot on the preseason watch list, joining finalists Michael Dickson (Texas) and Mitch Wishnowsky (Utah), and fellow semifinalists Johnny Townsend (Florida) and Zach Sinor (Oklahoma State).
Â
Davidson was named fourth team All-American by Phil Steele a year ago after averaging 45.8 yards per punt, fifth-best in the country. His net punting average of 43.1 yards was second and he tied for the nation's longest punt of the year – an 82-yard bomb at Toledo. Davidson had just three touchbacks, compared to 19 punts of 50 or more yards and 21 downed inside the 20. He was named the Ray Guy Award National Punter of the Week after averaging 47.4 yards per punt over eight punts against Memphis, with two 60 yarders and five inside the 20.
Â
Davidson was also First Team Academic All-American and carries a 3.94 grade point average with a double major in finance and mathematics.
The number of eligible candidates for this season will grow when the award opens nominations in September. The complete list of candidates will be released on Oct. 31. In early November, the Ray Guy Award committee will meet to select the ten semifinalists, who will be announced on Nov. 16. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, media representatives, and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the top three finalists to be announced on Nov. 21. After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation's top punter. The winner will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards airing on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 7.
