Between The Hashmarks: Offense, Defense Shine In First Scrimmage
August 12, 2017 | Football
Bowling Green, Ohio - Saturday morning's scrimmage was the first of the fall for the BGSU Football team and a chance for season ticket holders to view the open practice. BGSU's No. 1 offense had success moving the ball into the red zone but the No. 1 defensive unit held strong throughout the morning with a bend-but-don't break mentality.
OPENING DRIVE
* James Morgan drove the offense into the red zone before a snapped fumble on the 19-yard line ended the drive.
* Gus Schwieterman recovered the fumble.
* Freshman Quintin Morris made a big catch to extend the drive on one third down play. The Falcons converted a pair of third downs on the drive.
SECOND DRIVE
* Grant Loy opened the second drive under center and found slot receiver redshirt freshman Bryson Denley for a first down.
* A quarterback sack ended the drive.
THIRD DRIVE
* James Morgan returned to quarterback the No. 1 offense and drove the team inside the red zone again before the drive stalled.
* Datrin Guyton made a big third down catch in traffic.
* Montre Gregory stepped up defensively, dropping a BG ball carrier in the backfield.
* Jake Suder knocked in a 24-yard field goal, the first of numerous good field goals on a perfect day for the veteran kicker.
FOURTH DRIVE
* With freshman Jarret Doege under center, the Falcon defense came alive.
* Freshman Josh Croslen snuffed out a third down screen attempt and Malik Brown registered a sack on fourth down.
FIFTH DRIVE
* The BGSU offense started on its own four and Donovan Wilson took the first play 16 yards to get out of the shadow of the end zone.
* Suder ended the drive with a 44-yard field goal.
OTHER NOTABLE MOMENTS
* BGSU used much of the rest of the scrimmage to work on situational drives.
* Kyle Junior stopped a drive with a third down quarterback sack.
* Jarret Doege found Deric Phouthavong for an acrobatic 32-yard touchdown catch along the sideline.
QUOTABLE
"The defensive guys have done a great job studying their craft during the spring. They were focused during summer workouts; watched extra video on their own. I was happy to so those guys fly around like they did. Offensively, we didn't play badly either. We controlled the clock and converted on third down." Head Coach Mike Jinks
