Tennis Ignites 2017-18 Season with Strong Open at BGSU Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green tennis program opened the 2017-18 season with the first day of competition in the BGSU Invitational, and will have five singles in the semifinals as well as two doubles pairings competing in tomorrow's finals.
The two-day, eight-team tournament was held at Keefe Courts on the BGSU campus, as well as at the Bowling Green High School courts. Tomorrow's competition will begin promptly at 9 a.m. while all remaining competition will take place at Keefe Courts.
Joining the Falcons in kicking off the 2017-18 campaign will be Mid-American Conference foe Toledo, as well as Kenyon, Case Western, Tiffin, Shawnee State, Northwestern and Oberlin.

Day One Highlights
- The four-player freshman class were strong contributors to Bowling Green victories in the first day of play, as the rookies had a hand in eight of the 15 Falcon wins on the day.
- Three Falcons went undefeated on the day's action, including Marharita-Sophia Tavpash, Paula Comella and Marta Bettinelli. Tavpash tallied two single and two double victories, while Comella and Bettinelli each marked a singles and a double win.
- Ayumi Sasaki battled through a tie-breaker in the Freddie Flight of singles action to advance to tomorrow's semifinals. The Montreal, Quebec native defeated Tiffin's Lauren Prince in the opening set 6-3, but dropped the second 3-6. Sasaki then clinched the tie-breaker by a dramatic 10-8 mark.
Tomorrow's Tournament Action to Keep an Eye On
- Freshman Marta Bettinelli and sophomore Ayumi Sasaki will each be competing as singles in the Freddie Flight Three semifinals.
- Freshman Sidney Reineke will move on to the Falcons Flight semifinals vs. Anais Geslin (Tiffin), who advanced by scores of 6-0, 6-0 against Shawnee and 6-2, 6-2 against Case Western.
- Junior Paula Comella will advance to the semifinals of the Orange Draw against Diana Aboubakare (Kenyon), who defeated UNOH by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 10-4.
- A pair of Falcons will appear each as singles in the semifinals of the Brown Draw, as sophomore Marharita-Sophia Tavpash is to take on Sidney Huck (Toledo), who advanced by scores of 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 against Tiffin. Tavpash will look to advance to the finals with fellow falcon junior Polina Radeva, who will face Coleen O'Brien (Toledo) who defeated Case Western 6-3, 7-6 (4) and Tiffin 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4).
- In doubles action, Comella / Bettinelli will compete in the final of doubles flight one against Mid-American Conference foes Kendall-Woseley / Leenabanchong (Toledo), who defeated Case Western 6-4 and Kenyon 6-3 in today's play.
- In doubles flight two, Tavpash / Wassmann will look to claim the title with a victory over O'Brien / Huck (Toledo), who have already downed Case Western 6-1 and Bowling Green's Radeva / Sasaki.
