1967-68 BGSU Men's Basketball: The NCAA Tournament Game
January 17, 2018 | Men's Basketball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – On Jan. 20, when the BGSU men's basketball team takes on Central Michigan at the Stroh Center at 3:30 p.m., the program will honor the 1967-68 team, as members of the team and coaching staff return to campus. This season marks the 50-year anniversary of the team's MAC Championship and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Below is more information on the team's contest in the 1968 NCAA Tournament.
The 1967-68 Bowling Green men's basketball season was full of many thrilling moments, and while the result may not have been what the team was looking for, the program's NCAA Tournament game was a back-and-forth contest that went down to the wire.
BGSU paired up with Marquette University in the 1968 NCAA Tournament on March 9, 1968. The first-round matchup was part of the Mideast region. Marquette came in with an impressive regular season, finishing 18-5 playing as an independent that season.
Both teams were led by their heavy hitters during the regular season, as Walt Piatkowski helped carry the Falcons and George Thompson led the Warriors (now known as the Golden Eagles). During that 1967-68 season Piatkowski averaged 21.6 points per game while Thompson averaged 20.4, respectively.
After one half of play, the Warriors were beating the Falcons by a score of 39-34, but even after the Falcons outscored the Eagles in the second half, 37-33, the Warriors still prevailed and ended up winning the one-possession contest by a score of 72-71.
Thompson and Piatkowski were the standouts for their respective teams. Piatkowski scored 27 points with five rebounds, while Thompson scored 33 points with 10 rebounds. Other contributors for the Falcons included Al Hairston with 18 points and Carl Assenheimer with 10 points.
As for the team numbers, BGSU shot 46 percent from the floor (29-of-63), while Marquette shot 49 percent (28-of-57). Perhaps the story of the game was poor free throw shooting, as both teams shot below 62 percent despite attempting more than 20 free throws. BGSU shot 61 percent (13-of-21) from the charity stripe while Marquette shot 57 percent (16-of-28).
