Kruse, Gustafson Named Jet's Athletes Of The Week
January 22, 2018 | General, Ice Hockey, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are hockey player Brandon Kruse and track and field student-athlete Aliyah Gustafson.
Male Athlete of the Week
Brandon Kruse, a freshman from Saline, Mich., earned four points on the weekend by scoring one goal and three assists against Alaska Anchorage, and comes off the weekend on a two-game point streak. Kruse earned a career-high three-point night on Saturday when he scored the game-winning goal with 6:53 remaining in regulation, lifting the Falcons to a 3-2 victory and the sweep of the Seawolves. Earlier in the evening, Kruse helped the Falcons erase a two-goal deficit by assisting on both Chris Pohlkamp's first goal since Oct. 31, 2015, as well as on fellow freshman Max Johnson's seventh goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. In the opening game of the series, Kruse assisted on Mitch McLain's team-leading 12th goal of the season that put the Falcons up 4-1 over Alaska Anchorage. On the weekend, Kruse's four points were in addition to three shots on goal and a plus-3 rating on the ice.
Female Athlete of the Week
Aliyah Gustafson, a redshirt senior from Iowa City, Iowa, broke the school's shot put record for the third time in three meets, shattering her previous best mark by more than 18 inches with a toss of 55-feet-10.5. That throw moved her up from 10th to eighth nationally in the event as he attempts to become the first Falcon to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships since 2001. Gustafson also set a new personal best in the weight throw at 64-6.5, moving to 21st in the country in that event. She won both events at the Tom Wright Classic Friday evening.
