Hubert scores twice, Barnes finds the net in 3-1 road win
The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team remained undefeated in Mid-American Conference play, going to Central Michigan University and coming away with a 3-1 win Thursday night (Oct. 4).
Senior Erica Hubert scored a pair of goals and sophomore Sophia Barnes also found the back of the net as the Falcons built a three-goal lead.
BGSU has won six-straight games, and the Falcons now have a seven-match unbeaten streak, having gone 6-0-1 in that time.
CMU scored with under four minutes remaining in the match, snapping a streak of five consecutive shutouts for the Falcons.
BGSU held a 17-6 advantage in shot attempts, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT
• BGSU continues to sail into uncharted waters. The Falcons are 5-0-0 in the MAC for the first time in school history. The 2000 team was the only other Falcon squad to win as many as three-straight games to start the conference portion of the schedule.
FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 1' | Senior Jennifer Reyes sent a ball down the left sideline to classmate Erica Hubert. Hubert cut the ball back to her right and hit a shot, but CMU goalkeeper Morgan Britain made the save, just 43 seconds into the match.
• 11' | Junior Chelsee Washington looked to bloop a short ball over the top to Hubert, but the assistant referee's flag was raised, indicating offside against the Falcons.
• 13' | BG won a corner kick, and junior Maureen Kennedy's corner curved toward the goal and actually glanced off the crossbar before CMU was able to clear it out of danger.
• 19' | Senior Morgan Abbitt hit a ball out of BG's defensive end of the field, to classmate Laura Bozzelli. Bozzelli was fouled near midfield, and Abbitt put the ensuing free kick toward the box. Redshirt sophomore Nikki Cox headed the ball along, and Hubert – facing away from goal – kicked the ball back over her head. The shot was on frame, but Britain was able to make a diving save, tipping the ball wide of the right goalpost.
• 23' | Cox picked up a loose ball on the right side of the box, but her shot toward the far post goes wide.
• 24' | Just after checking into the match for the first time, freshman Sarah Allen took a pass from Cox. Allen cut the ball back and hit a shot from the left side, but Britain made the save.
• 25' | GOAL | Reyes served the ball to Hubert from the left side of the pitch. Hubert quickly fired a shot that was parried by Britain. Hubert quickly gathered the rebound and knocked the ball into the vacated net to give the Falcons a lead they would not relinquish.
• 26' | Soon after the BG goal, the Chippewas came right back down the field, and Lexi Pelafas hit a shot from the right side of the box. But, BGSU junior goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve made the save, blocking the shot from close range. Pelafas slid the rebound across the box, but the Falcons cleared it out of the danger zone.
• 33' | GOAL | Reyes hit a diagonal ball into the box from the left side. Sophomore Sophia Barnes ran past her defender and went high into the air to get her head on the serve. The ball found the upper right corner of the net for a 2-0 BG lead.
• 36'  | Allen sent the ball out to junior Kristin Tveit on the left side, and Tveit slid a pass back toward the middle. Washington hit a blast from distance, but the shot went just high.
• 39' | CMU won a free kick just outside the 18 on the left side, but that kick, taken by Abby Willerer, went well over the crossbar.
• 44' | Off of a deflection, Central's Shannon Magnan hit a hard shot that went just over the bar. Magnan's shot and the Pelafas effort in the 26th minute were arguably the hosts' best scoring chances of the opening 45 minutes.
SECOND-HALF HIGHLIGHTS
• 47' | Cox was fouled just outside the box on the right side, but Washington's free kick sailed just over the upper left corner of the goal.
• 48' | POST | BG quickly won the ball back, and a pass split two defenders and headed into the box. Britain was forced to come off of her line, but Hubert beat her to the ball, poking it past the 'keeper. But, Hubert's shot hit the inside of the left post and bounced through the goalmouth, just behind Bozzelli, before a CMU defender cleared the ball out for a corner kick.
• 49' | Off of that corner, the ball came out to senior Alexis Fricke, who hit a hard shot that whizzed wide of the target.
• 53' | BGSU controlled the ball in the midfield, with Hubert, sophomore Nikhita Jacob, Fricke and Washington involved in the game of keep-away. A Jacob pass found Kennedy on the left side, but the junior's serve was headed away by a defender in the penalty area.
• 54' | GOAL | On a long ball forward, Cox – facing away from goal - got her head on it, nodding it over the last line of defense and into the path of Hubert. The senior sharpshooter made no mistake, slotting the ball past Britain for the Falcons' third goal.
• 60' | The Falcons countered after Cox won a ball at midfield. Cox took the ball downfield and played it wide to Hubert, but Hubert's left-side cross was blocked just before it could reach Bozzelli in the box.
• 64' | Fricke stole the ball near the CMU logo at midfield, playing a pass ahead to Cox. Cox's through ball found Bozzelli sprinting into the right side of the box, but Britain was able to block Bozzelli's scorcher from approximately six yards out.
• 74' | Cox hit a hard shot from distance, but the ball was saved near the right post.
• 76' | Senior Marissa Swindell was fouled as she tried to get past a defender just outside the penalty area on the right side. Kennedy's free kick was on target, but was saved near the left goalpost.
• 84' | After a BG turnover, Kennedy cleared a CMU serve out of the box while fending off a Chippewa striker at the same time.
• 85' | POST | Jacob sent Barnes down the right side and the sophomore hit a cross into the box. Cox tapped the ball into the path of Swindell, who hit a hard, curving shot that thwacked off of the right post.
• 87' | GOAL | The Chippewas got on the board with just 3:47 left, as a Pelafas cross from the right side found Madison Costner for a far-post header. Costner's goal ended a lengthy shutout streak, but was not enough to keep the Falcons from extending their winning streak.
