BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, as the University of Michigan posted a 1-0 win over the Falcons on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 30), in non-conference action at Cochrane Stadium.

Elle Ervin scored the game's lone goal, giving the Wolverines (1-0-3) the lead with a header off of a corner kick midway through the first half.

The Falcons (2-1-1) held a 12-10 advantage in total shot attempts, including a 10-5 lead in the second half, while U-M had a narrow 4-3 lead in shots on goal. BG had five corner kicks to Michigan's three.

Brooklyn Reid made three saves in goal for the visitors, while junior Payton O'Malley had three stops for the hosts.

Ervin's goal came at the 21:34 mark, as she headed home a corner kick off the boot of Adi Walick.

That goal was the first allowed by the Falcons this season.

BGSU had several quality chances in the latter stages of the match, but could not find the equalizer. Senior Lizzie Bultynck, who had gotten her head on a Michigan goal kick moments earlier, applied pressure to force a miskicked ball by a Wolverine defender.

Senior Isabella Mazzaferro pounced on the ball, and her right-side cross found the head of sophomore Quinn O'Neil. O'Neil headed the ball down, but Reid was able to grab the shot with a diving effort after the bounce, with approximately 18 minutes to go.

Under 10 minutes remained when junior Minah Syam took a pass from senior Ella Kane near midfield. Syam headed forward and slid a pass to senior Audrey Oliver, who fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box, but Oliver's effort sailed just wide of the left post.

With just over two minutes left, Syam picked up an errant U-M pass near midfield, taking several dribbles into the offensive end. She slid a ball to freshman Mia Ugarte at the top of the box, and Ugarte in turn laid the ball into the path of the onrushing Oliver. But, Oliver's one-time was blocked by a lunging Michigan defender.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• As mentioned, Michigan's goal was the first allowed by the Falcons this season. Through four matches, BGSU has a team goals-against average of just 0.25.
• The Falcons have not allowed more than one goal in a match since the final regular-season contest of the 2024 season.

UP NEXT
• The Falcons are idle until next Sunday (Sept. 6), when BG will head to Lexington to take on the University of Kentucky. That match will begin at 1:00 p.m.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will return home for back-to-back Thursday-evening matches, ending the non-conference schedule against Detroit Mercy (Sept. 10) before opening the Mid-American Conference slate vs. Eastern Michigan one week later (Sept. 17). Both the UDM and EMU contests will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free.
